Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson calls for showdown with Robbie Lawler

By Tom Taylor - September 25, 2018

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has not fought since May, when he gave up a hotly debated decision to an overweight Darren Till in Liverpool, UK. From the sounds of it, he’s hoping to change that soon. Speaking on Twitter on Monday, the two-time welterweight title challenger called for a early 2019 showdown with former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.

Stephen Thompson, Robbie Lawler

“I heard you’re going to be ready early next year [Robbie Lawler],” Stephen Thompson said on Twitter. “I know a guy who will be ready then too. Let’s give the fans what they want! I’m bringing the heat back, and you know this fight will be FIRE!”

Stephen Thompson and Robbie Lawler were previously linked to January 2019 scrap, which was expected to occur on the UFC’s first card on ESPN. As Thompson’ told BJPENN.COM’s Chris Taylor, however, reports of this matchup were premature.

“’Nothing is set at all,” Thompson told Taylor. “I would love that fight but Robbie may not be ready at all… so it’s up in the air right now… there is no telling who I’ll fight next to be honest.”

From the sounds of it, this matchup is now back on the table.

While Stephen Thompson has now been on the bench for some time, it’s been even longer since we last saw Robbie Lawler in action. The former champion has not fought since December of 2017, when he gave up a decision to former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC on Fox 26.

Should this Stephen Thompson vs. Robbie Lawler matchup be booked, the former will enter the cage with a 14-3-1 overall, record, while the latter will step into the cage with an overall mark of 28-12.
