“Well, you know, Mauro, that whole thing about Alistair (Overeem), I think it’s been documented. I think it’s been regurgitated over and over so I don’t know if we have to get into that. But with Valentijn (Overeem) and Marloes (Coenen), you know, right now, there’s only so many TV spots, as you know, until the middle of next year. And, uh, they’re, um, you know, in this business, you’ve gotta keep winning. So, to me, it was a situation where Valentijn had that loss, I believe in June, so that was already in the works anyway. It just seems sudden to everybody because it just all happened this week. But that was already on its way for Valentijn. The slots are going to be for the fighters that are victorious right now. We have a lot of athletes under contract and we have to get everybody fights and there’s only so many slots. There’s only so many TV dates, we only have two more TV dates on the big show before the end of the year. September is already full, December is getting full and then January is hopefully are finals and that’s going to have a full card already. So in fairness to the athletes, why just let them hang around? It’s a much fairer situation to let them go fight elsewhere and create another future somewhere else.”
Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker, goes on record with The Fight Show with Mauro Ranallo about the recent termination of all but one Golden Glory fighter in his organization.
Golden Glory houses ex-Strikeforce fighters Alistair Overeem, Marloes Coenen and Valentijn Overeem, who have all been released by the organization.
The only fighter left on the Strikeforce roster from the Golden Glory camp is Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semi-finalist, Sergei Kharitonov who will more than likely be fighting for his career with the promotion on Sept. 10 against Josh Barnett.
Is it truly fair business?

Zuffas fault?
Perhaps but Zuffa only wants the best. It’s such a booming sport, and it seems like everyone and their grandmas are training to be an MMA fighter. To keep getting paid, you have to keep evolving and proving your place in an organization.
That’s why Tito and Chuck liddell kept getting fights after 3-4 losses in a row, and were never cut? That’s why guys like Stevenson have to lose 4 or 5 fights to get cut?
C’mon, use your brain. This has nothing to do with who won or lost, and saying that is insulting our intelligence. It’s about their management, and Zuffa using bully tactics. If cutting Coenen was a fair move, I guess they should cut all champions who fail to defend their belts? If they did this for everyone, the women’s division would be down to just one person–the champ. Coenen is the No. 2 female at 135 in the world! She didn’t get cut because of her performance, it’s because of her associations. Thinking someone in the top 5 isn’t “evolving and proving their place” is just asinine. So you have to be champion and No. 1 in your division to prove your place?
cokers not making a lot of sense here,
i was following him about releasing valentine, that makes sense.
but it doesnt make sense that the marlos was cut after one loss considering she was a former champ.
it also doesnt make sense that the golden glory fighter in UFC was cut, NOW months removed from the event.
and it baffles me that they’ve cut Overeem, who hasnt even lost yet.
