As of right now there] are still two weight divisions: 135lbs and 145lbs.”
“It’s already hard for me to drop to 145lbs, I gotta work a lot and they’re thinking about one division only. They asked me if I could do it. I can try; it’s not impossible. Let’s see… I guess that in the future there’ll be some news. It’ll be hard because I got a lot of weight to lose, but it’d be good because I could fight more. I guess it’s important to keep active, it’s my job, so I’ll try it to stay here.”
Brazilian media outlet, Tatame.com recently sat down with the most feared female fighter on the planet to get an update on what’s going on with her career.
When Cyborg stepped on the world stage back in 2008 for EliteXC she struck fear in the hearts of all Gina Carano fans worldwide. She brought in a level of skill and violence not yet seen in women’s MMA and she has been doing so ever since.
The problem that Cyborg is having is that the female divisions (145 and 135 pounds) are not deep with talent and as such she doesn’t have a single fighter peaking through the contender ladder that is a sufficient challenge or threat to her title.
After failed contract negotiations kept her out of action for a year, the Strikeforce Queen is ready to return to action and has finally reached a four-fight agreement with her promotional home.
However who shall she fight? And if the brass at Strikeforce make her drop to 135 pounds what does that mean for the reigning Meisha Tate? Will she be forced to get brutalized by Cyborg due to a lack of depth and merged divisions?

Unless it’s the women’s world cup in soccer… female sports will never garner that much attention. Women’s mma is doomed to have the same fate as women’s boxing, hardly seen, hardly heard, hardly there.
That’s only because it was never promoted. You can make anything huge, with the right promotion. There are plenty of fans (including males) that enjoy watching women fight. I’d put money down on any of these pro mma women fighters taking on any regular joe blow out there. Most of these chicks can throwdown, and better than your average guy. I’ll even go as far as your average guy who does some training.

Give her Ronda Rousey! The good thing about this dearth of talent is that the female competitors can travel between bantam and feather weight divisions to get the matches they seek. I want to see a rematch between her and Gina Carano but I think she retired herself after that beat down. Here is a crazy idea, if she wants that Gina Carano money she should hold both weight classes belts.

As much as I like watching the women fight, based on historical acquisitions of the UFC and Dana not being a fan of women fighting in the UFC, I think it’s just Zuffa’s way of dwindling down the Strikeforce roster and riding out all the remaining contracts. I really do hope that Dana changes his mind about women’s MMA. It can only draw in more revenue.
I actually think it’s the opposite. It looks like they’re trying to strengthen the numbers for women’s MMA division by division so they can have a chance to enter the UFC.

I’ve only seen a few female MMA fights and I think the skill level is much lower, It’s not as enjoyable but as the female sport of MMA grows so will the interest and hopefully mean more fighters and more skillful fighters.
I don’t see females in the UFC anytime soon because it would put a lot of new audiences off IMO as females fighting is not often seen. However once the UFC has established a large enough fan base and following then there may be a chance female MMA could succeed in the UFC.

Those two weight division, imo, are the average weight a female fighter should be. I think the reasoning behind removing the FW division would be to create more potential match ups since the woman’s side lacks depth. How about a BW Grand Prix? Or is woman’s MMA not a big enough draw? Carano, Tate, Cyborg, Rousey, Coennen….sounds like an interesting Royal Rumble! LOL TEAM PENN!!!!!
