It seems silly to me to compare a sport that is 150 or more years into it’s existence to a sport that has been around for only about 20 eller så. Let’s take a look at both sport’s pay at a relatively similar time in their development…

Boxing’s Marquess of Queensberry rules, under which the sport has since been governed, were published in 1867, although the sport was around long before this, we can use this as a starting point

I 1882, 15 years later HW champ “John Sullivan” fought Paddy Ryan and earned $5,000, 28.9 times the national average wage…. he also had to put up $2,500 for the fight, winner take all, his opponent HW Champ at the time LOST 28.9 times the national average wage that night!! For those non math geeks out there, net fighter pay for that ‘event’ was $0….

UFC1 was in 1993, MMA’s unified rules were published in 2000
I 2010, kun 17 yrs after UFC 1 og 10 years after Unified Rules in place (split the difference and we are at a similar relative time)

UFC HW champ Brock Lesnar fought twice earning (with sponsorships) $5.3 millioner, which between his 2 fights is 63.5 times the national average income per fight

avg annual income- (varies a bit depending on source)
1880s- $345
2011- $41,673

They are two different things, so it wont be exact, but the UFC ain’t doing all that bad or paying out all that bad for a growing sport. Sullivan surely made other money, but no records I know of exist, or not that I’m going to waste time finding. The UFC takes money and puts it back into the growth of it’s product. Seems like a decent plan for the long term success of a business.
