It seems silly to me to compare a sport that is 150 or more years into it’s existence to a sport that has been around for only about 20 左右. Let’s take a look at both sport’s pay at a relatively similar time in their development…

UFC1 was in 1993, MMA’s unified rules were published in 2000

They are two different things, so it wont be exact, but the UFC ain’t doing all that bad or paying out all that bad for a growing sport. Sullivan surely made other money, but no records I know of exist, or not that I’m going to waste time finding. The UFC takes money and puts it back into the growth of it’s product. Seems like a decent plan for the long term success of a business.
