The highly anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez 49-1-2 (34 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin 38-0-1 (34 KOs) took place tonight live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The pair first met last September and after twelve rounds of exciting back and forth action the fight went to the judges scorecards for decision.

It’s definitely not the news you ever want to hear but it has become the regular type of news we will hear every so often now. Another top fighter has failed a drug test, but this time in the boxing world. One of the top pound-4-pound current best, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has reportedly tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, according to the LA Times. Canelo is just two months out from his big rematch with his fellow top pound-4-pound boxer, Gennady Golovkin. The two first fought to a controversial draw back in September.

Every boxing fan around the world wanted the super fight between two of the pound-4-pound best in “GGG” Gennady Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to happen…then it did. The two competed against one another last September in a back and forth affair that resulted in a controversial draw. But no worries now, they will get to try and settle things one more time as Golden Boy Promotions announced that a rematch has been made official for May 5. Over the weekend, combat sports headlines were dominated by a blockbuster boxing match between stars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, which resulted in a thrilling – if debatable – split draw. Unfortunately, many of the headlines that emerged post-fight were negative. Many of those negative headlines surrounded a truly baffling score from ring-side judge Adalaide Byrd, who scored the fight 118-110 for Canelo. In the wake of this logic defying score, NSAC executive director Bob Bennett, who oversaw the Canelo-GGG fight, admitted that Byrd might need a “small break” from judging big fights.

Last night, boxing stars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and “GGG” Gennady Golovkin finally stepped into the ring together. The fight was everything we hoped for, as the two brilliant fighters swapped heavy artillery for twelve exciting rounds. Unfortunately, the fight’s outcome was quite controversial. Though the consensus seems to be that Golovkin did enough to win, the fight was instead ruled a split-draw. Most bafflingly of all, one judge, Adalaide Byrd, scored the contest 118-110 score for Canelo.

If Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor never had their big-money boxing match this year, there is no doubt that the biggest boxing fight this year would be between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. The two boxing stars are set to fight in their championship fight for the IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBC middleweight titles this weekend on Saturday, September 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In this video, we take a look at some of Alvarez’s amazing knockouts and power punches displayed throughout his career. Canelo holds a 49-1-1 professional boxing record with 34 wins coming by way of KO/TKO. Alvarez’s only loss took place back in 2013 against undefeated great, Floyd Mayweather. On August 26, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will step into the boxing ring with undefeated pugilist Floyd Mayweather in a contest being hailed as “the biggest fight in combat sports history.” In the eyes of many boxing purists, though, it’s more of a freak show. In their eyes, the real super fight occurs on September 16, when Kazakh juggernaut Gennady Golovkin will step through the ropes to battle Mexican destroyer Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. While this latter fight is the one that’s got diehard boxing fans most excited, however, it doesn’t really do much for McGregor. In fact, the Irish star finds both Canelo and ‘GGG’ pretty underwhelming.

Over the weekend, Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez picked up a dominant decision win over rival Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. While this fight was not particularly thrilling, the aftermath of it absolutely was, as it was announced that Canelo would next step into the ring with Kazakh star Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. The two talents will collide on September 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight stands out as perhaps the biggest and most important that can currently be made in boxing – though a certain Irishman would argue otherwise. Though this fight is still months away, the early odds for it have already been released. As most boxing fans probably expected, GGG has been installed as a slight favorite over his Mexican foe.
