Floyd Mayweather reacts to Conor McGregor comparisons
This past weekend at the Madison Square Garden, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor made his way into the UFC history books as he secured the UFC lightweight championship, defeating Eddie Alvarez via 2nd round TKO to become the first man in UFC history to simultaneously hold UFC titles in two divisions.
With the win, and given his dominance in the fight, many have begun to compare McGregor to undefeated boxing icon Floyd Mayweather, who was rumored to be fighting McGregor in a boxing match at one point.
Needless to say, Mayweather wasn’t pleased with the McGregor comparisons, and spoke to TMZ to fire back at those comparisons, saying:
“I didn’t know Conor McGregor was undefeated, I didn’t know he’s been reigning [over] MMA twenty years undefeated, and was world champion in five different weight classes. That’s something I didn’t know…So I guess you guys are telling me something new if you’re saying he’s the Floyd Mayweather of MMA. If you’re saying he’s the Floyd Mayweather of MMA I’m trying to find out, has he ever made $300 million in one night? Have you ever made $100 million in one night? Have you ever made $70 million in one night. As far as trying to say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of MMA, I mean it’s okay to say it…it’s just not true.”
“I’m a legend, a living legend, I gave years and years of hard work to the sport of boxing, it was blood, sweat, & tears, had a tremendous team, a tremendous run. Conor McGregor goes out there and does what he does, but never compare Conor McGregor to me. That’s a total disrespect. I’m an elephant, elephant don’t beef with ants. Elephant is so large he doesn’t even see ants.”
After McGregor was pulled from his UFC 200 rematch with Nate Diaz for refusing to fulfill his media obligations, there were talks of McGregor making the jump to boxing for a match with Mayweather. Talks grew to the point that a Fox Sports 1 host even went as far as to announce the date for the fight between Mayweather & McGregor.
With that being said, talks never resulted in a fight being booked, and with McGregor announcing he & his girlfriend Dee Devlin would be having a baby soon, the opportunity for a Mayweather vs. McGregor fight may have slipped by.
