After defeating Keith Thuman by split decision last Saturday night, Manny Pacquiao said that he’s interested in a potential rematch against rival Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao’s long-time boxing trainer Freddie Roach says that his team wants this fight, and believes the rematch will go much differently than the pair’s first encounter back in 2015, which Mayweather won via unanimous decision. Speaking to TMZ Sports, Roach candidly said he believes Pacquiao would knock out Mayweather in the rematch.

On Saturday night, Manny Pacquiao defeated Keith Thurman via split decision to become the new WBA welterweight champion. It was the third win in a row for Pacquiao, who at age 40 doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. As soon as the fight was over, there was already talk of a potential rematch against fellow boxing legend Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao and Mayweather met back in 2015 in what turned out to be one of the biggest money fights of all time in combat sports. The fight itself wasn’t anything special, and Mayweather got his hand raised by unanimous decision in what was a disappointing fight for fans who wanted to be more entertained. However, there’s been talk of a rematch ever since then due to the potential riches, and now that Pacquiao has beaten Thurman, expect those talks to ramp up again.

The now 40-year-old Filipino Icon, Pacquiao (61-7-2), wass coming off a pair of dominant victories over Lucas Matthysse and Adrien Broner. ‘Pacman’ is the only fighter in boxing history to hold title in eight different weight classes, and was looking to add to that list when he squared off with Thurman this evening.

Late last week, RIZIN Fighting Federation boss Nobuyuki Sakakibara hinted at a deal with Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao. In the weeks leading up to this exhibition bout — and really, until the very point the contest began — Floyd Mayweather looked like he was taking it all about as seriously as a walk to the bank (in the eyes of some fans, it wasn’t much more than that). Once the action began, however, the American boxer cranked up the offense, punishing his much smaller opponent with ferocious power shots the likes of which he hasn’t thrown in years. Suddenly, it seemed as though he was taking the fight very seriously.

The Irishman himself claims it is an MMA fight that’s next, so Bruce Buffer brings up the idea of Pacquiao meeting the champ in the Octagon instead. “All respect to Manny Pacquiao, one of my favorite boxers of all time. I think, for me personally, the [Floyd] Mayweather/Conor McGregor fight was the fight that we all enjoyed and got our $100 worth of entertainment. I would rather much see Conor get back into MMA. It excites me much more. I mean, let’s see a boxer want to step up and fight under MMA rules and fight Conor in the Octagon, and it might be another tremendously huge payday.”

However, it looks like it is more than just talk. The two have entered into negotiations to have a multi-million dollar boxing match in April of 2018. If this goes down, McGregor would most likely vacate his UFC lightweight title in order to make another obscene amount of money.    In the boxing world, reports tonight Manny Pacquiao -39 later this month – has confirmed he’s opened talks to fight Conor McGregor in April next year.

Back in August, UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor stepped through the ropes of the boxing to battle undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. While the Irishman must be commended for taking on such a decorated legend in his pro boxing debut, his effort to do so ultimately went the way most expected, as he was stopped by a volley of punches in the 10th round. With this boxing match soundly in the rear-view, the perception has been that McGregor’s next fight will be in the UFC’s Octagon. In terms of possible opponents, the frontrunner is definitely Tony Ferguson, though Nate Diaz, Tyron Woodley and Georges St-Pierre are also being options.
