Kyle Nelson believes Canadian sweep at UFC 289 will force the promotion to come back to Canada this year

Kyle Nelson couldn’t be happier with how UFC 289 played out. The Octagon returned to Canada for the first time since 2019 on June 10th, as the promotion headed to Vancouver for UFC 289. On the card were five Canadians – six if you include Diana Belbita who calls Canada home – but many, including Kyle Nelson were the betting underdogs.

Kyle Nelson gets to fight in his home country of Canada once again. Nelson made his UFC debut at UFC 231 in Toronto on short notice against Diego Ferreira. Since then, he hasn’t fought back in Canada – in large part due to the promotion not having an event in the country since 2019 – so he’s eager to get the chance to fight in his home Nation again.

UFC president Dana White has confirmed that he paid Doo Ho Choi his win money despite the majority draw against Kyle Nelson. After over two years away due to mandatory military service, Doo Ho Choi returned to action last weekend. He went toe to toe with Kyle Nelson and given that he was coming off the back of three straight losses, we’d say he was pretty hungry to secure the win.

Tonight’s UFC Vegas 68 main card features the return of fan favorite Doo Ho Choi, aka. The Korean Superboy. Choi (14-4 MMA) has not competed inside the Octagon since suffering a TKO loss to Charles Jourdain in December of 2019. That loss had marked his third in a row, as he previously suffered setbacks to Jeremy Stephens and Cub Swanson respectively.

Kyle Nelson will be dropping back down to featherweight. After Nelson lost by third-round KO to Billy Quarantillo, he said he would be moving up to lightweight for good. He then took on Jai Herbert at 155lbs but lost a decision. With that, he will now be returning to 145lbs at UFC Vegas 68 to face Doo Ho Choi.

Kyle Nelson knew he had to move up to lightweight after his last fight. Nelson hasn’t fought since September of 2020 when he suffered a KO loss to Billy Quarantillo. The loss dropped him to 1-3 in the UFC and he wasn’t sure if the UFC was going to re-sign him, but even if they didn’t, his next fight was going to be at lightweight.

Canadian Kyle Nelson will indeed be a UFC fighter for the foreseeable future. Nelson stepped in on short notice to fight Diego Ferreira at UFC 231. However, he lost the fight in the second round by TKO. Even though he lost the fight, Nelson was satisfied with his performance.
