Report | Former title challenger Liz Carmouche cut from UFC — while doing promotional work

Liz Carmouche, who competed in the first women’s bout in UFC history, and contended for titles in two weight classes, has been cut from the promotion, her manager told ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani. To add insult to injury, Carmouche was reportedly doing promotional work for the UFC in Washington, D.C., when she learned that she was being released.

Valentina Shevchenko and Liz Carmouche are now tied 1-1 across two bouts. Carmouche won the first fight, a 2010 encounter, with a controversial cut-related stoppage. Shevchenko won the second fight, which headlined Saturday’s UFC Uruguay card, with a dominant unanimous decision win, retaining her UFC flyweight belt in the process. While this is not the type of rivalry that generally screams trilogy, Liz Carmouche is more than willing to step into the cage with Valentina Shevchenko again to settle their score.

Valentina Shevchenko put her UFC women’s flyweight title on the line against Liz Carmouche in this evenings UFC Uruguay main event. Tonight’s fight served as a rematch, as the ladies first met at C3 Fights, Red River Rivalry in 2010. There, Shevchenko (17-3) would suffer the first loss of her professional career. “Girl-Rilla” knocked out Valentina during the second round. However, Shevchenko believes it was a lucky strike that could have easily been stopped.

Shevchenko defeated Jessica Eye at UFC 238 in Chicago with a highlight reel head kick earlier this month, and she’s getting a quick turnaround for her second title defense. According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN citing multiple sources, Shevchenko will defend her flyweight title against Liz Carmouche on August 10, in the main event of UFC Uruguay.

The UFC had a difficult time locking down a main event for UFC San Antonio, which goes down on July 20. Eventually, the promotion landed on a welterweight contender bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Leon Edwards, but before that matchup was booked, several others were in consideration. One was a flyweight title fight between champion Valentina Shevchenko and challenger Liz Carmouche. While this matchup failed to come to fruition for the July 20 card in San Antonio, Shevchenko remains hopeful it will be booked soon. She has history with Carmouche, having experienced the first setback of her career against the American, and is eager for the opportunity to even the score. Particularly given the way their first fight ended.

Carmouche (10-5) took part in the historic title fight with Ronda Rousey back at UFC 157 shortly after the women’s bantamweight division was absorbed into the UFC following their purchase of Strikeforce.
