Australian featherweight contender Alex Volkanovski is in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for UFC 240, and is prepared to spring in to action in the event that Max Holloway or Frankie Edgar is unable to compete in the main event. In the end, both Holloway and Edgar made weight, which means Volkanovski won’t get a short-notice title shot due to a weigh-in blunder — although it’s still possible some other disaster could render his services necessary.

The UFC is protecting itself in case of a weigh-in mishap or last-second injury to the main event of Saturday’s UFC 240. Top featherweight contender Alexander Volkanovski is in Edmonton and on emergency standby in case something happens to headliners Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar at the official weigh-ins. Volkanovski is expected to weigh in and would jump in to fight in an emergency situation. TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter broke the news.

After Alex Volkanovski beat Jose Aldo at UFC 237, he along with many others expected he would the next title shot. Yet, that was not the case. Instead, the Aussie was passed over as Frankie Edgar will next face Max Holloway at UFC 240 for the featherweight title. Yesterday afternoon, news surfaced that the UFC is targeting a featherweight title fight between Max Holloway and Frankie Edgar for UFC 240 in July. The widespread reaction to this news is that top featherweight contender Alex Volkanovski, who just defeated Jose Aldo at UFC 237, is being snubbed. As it turns out, this is probably the least of the Australian’s contenders worries at present.

Australian featherweight contender Alex Volkanovski picked up the biggest victory of his career over the weekend, thumping the former champion Jose Aldo to a unanimous decision triumph on the main card of UFC 237. With this victory tacked onto his resume, Volkanovski is now a fantastic 19-1 overall — easily one of the best records in the UFC right now. His last seven victories have occurred in the UFC’s Octagon. In addition to Aldo, he’s also defeated top-flight foes like Chad Mendes, Darren Elkins and Jeremy Kennedy.
