Aljamain Sterling believes he could find success against Brian Ortega and Yair Rodriguez through his wrestling.
At UFC 300, Aljamain Sterling will attempt to make a winning start to life at featherweight as he prepares to battle Calvin Kattar. The expectation is that it’ll be an all-action affair, with Sterling beginning his pursuit of a second world title.
He ended his bantamweight run with a defeat to Sean O’Malley, but his run at the top has certainly given his fans confidence about what he could do at 145 pounds. After all, he has a proven track record.
Last weekend, we saw Brian Ortega and Yair Rodriguez battle it out in an entertaining clash. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, ‘Funk Master’ spoke candidly about possible matchups with them both.
Sterling looks at future opponents
“It’s funny because I never looked at these guys as opponents,” Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “I definitely look at the wrestling aspect. I could exploit that. They’re both tough. They’re durable. You can hit them, but they’re not going to go down.
“You’ve got to be smart. You’ve got to mix it up. Even if you get a takedown, they’re going to be looking to get back up – Ortega throwing up submissions off of his back, Yair throwing up submissions and punches off of his back.”
“People were telling me this is a good fight for me,” Sterling said of Ortega. “I’m like, ‘I think so.’ But we also don’t know how much better he’s gotten with the downtime, and I think we finally got to see that.”
