Prior to the setback, he was already talking about moving up to featherweight, as the cut to 135lbs was getting harder and harder.

It was on Saturday, August 19th at UFC 292 that bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling (23-4 MMA) took on Sean O’Malley (17-1 MMA) in the main even at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The outcome was a second-round TKO victory for the 28-year-old O’Malley, who in the process stripped ‘Funk Master’ of the crown, becoming the new champion.

Ultimately, it was O’Malley who became the new bantamweight champion with a second-round TKO win. Although Sterling was the champion, both he and Sean O’Malley made $500,000 for the fight.

Petr Yan is interested in running it back with Aljamain Sterling. Yan and Sterling have a history as the two first met at UFC 259 in March of 2021 as the Russian was defending his bantamweight title for the first time. Yan had success early on as he dropped Sterling and was outstriking him. However, in the fourth round, he threw a knee to Sterling’s head while he was on the ground and was DQ’d and lost his belt.

Heading into the contest, Aljamain Sterling was riding a wave of momentum. Last defeating Henry Cejudo in May, he set the record for most title defenses in bantamweight history. Meanwhile, Sean O’Malley entered the bout off a controversial decision win over Petr Yan last October.
