Amanda Nunes: “I knew I was going to beat the shit out of Ronda Rousey”
In the main event of UFC 207, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes stepped into the Octagon to make her first title defense against former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in a highly anticipated matchup. For Rousey, the fight served as her highly anticipated return over a year after she was knocked out by Holly Holm at UFC 193.
Leading up to the fight there were a lot of questions regarding how Rousey would look in her return fight, and handle the pressure of looking to rebound from the first loss of her career. On the flip side, there were many questions regarding how Nunes would handle fighting a legend like Rousey.
When the pair stepped into the Octagon, it was a very one-sided affair as Nunes landed a big punch early, stunning Rousey. The former champ never recovered, as Nunes continued to land a barrage of strikes as Rousey appeared to be out on her feet. Nunes then landed another flurry as Rousey backed up against the cage, ultimately forcing referee Herb Dean to stop the fight just 48 seconds after it started.
Following the fight, Nunes spoke to Joe Rogan in her post-fight Octagon interview, saying:
Nunes: she did a lot for the sport. She was the champion but now I'm the champion. I'm here to stay.
