Coker On Universal PED Testing Policy: “It Would Be Amazing”
Recently, the sport of MMA has gone through a troubling period recently when it comes to drug test. Many fighters, including pound for pound kings Anderson Silva, and Jon Jones, have tested positive for PEDs, among other fighters.
The PED epidemic is not just plaguing the UFC, as 4 fighters on the Bellator 127 card tested hot. Following that, WSOF fighter Jon Fitch tested positive for PEDs as well.
Bellator MMA released a press release, which was obtained by MMAJunkie regarding the recent drug testing failures:
“I want to make very clear that under new management, Bellator will simply not stand for performance-enhancing drugs inside our cage. We fully support the California State Athletic Commission in their process, and stand by any disciplinary action handed out by Commissioner Andy Foster and the CSAC. Fans, media and our athletes need to have a clear understanding that drug use will simply not be tolerated by Bellator.”
Coker went on to discuss the possibility of a universal drug testing policy across all promotions to MMAJunkie as well:
“I don’t think anybody wants to see this in our sport. It kind of gives our sport a black eye.”
“We are not a regulatory testing body, and (drug testing) is something that should be done by the people that do that. So, at the end of the day, I think it has to be done by somebody that this is what they do all the time. It’s just that until we get everybody on the same page, that’s going to be the issue.”
“It would be amazing if we could all get together with a worldwide testing policy, but everyone would have to support it. Otherwise I don’t think it would work.”
