Ryan Couture: ‘I’d be surprised if my dad came out of retirement’

By BJPENN.COM News - September 27, 2015

Fedor Emelianenko shocked the world when he announced his return to mixed martial arts at Bellator and GLORY’s “Dynamite” event earlier this month. “The Last Emperor” will not be fighting for Bellator, but rather a new Japanese promotion that will likely borrow Bellator’s talent for their first few shows. Emelianenko’s opponent remains unnamed, but fans are clamoring for a return to MMA for Randy Couture.

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture has not stepped foot inside of a cage for a fight since his loss to Lyoto Machida in 2011. Machida sent Couture tumbling to the canvas after catching him off guard with a jumping front kick and Couture has turned his concentration to career in Hollywood since then.

While he is busy with films like “The Expendables”, Couture isn’t completely done with mixed martial arts. Randy now trains and corners his son Ryan Couture during his journey with Bellator. Ryan was scheduled to fight on the preliminary portion of “Bellator 143”, but he was forced off the card when his opponent couldn’t make weight for their bout.

Ryan did media for his fight and was asked about the possibility of his father coming back to MMA to challenge Fedor Emelianenko on New Year’s Eve. His answer didn’t leave much hope for fans wishing to see Fedor vs. Couture. “I’d be pretty surprised if he decided to do that,” Ryan told MMA Fighting. “I don’t doubt that he’s capable of it, but I just don’t know that he has the desire to.”

Randy has a busy schedule but Ryan says his father has been around more than enough to make an impact on the gym lately. “He’ll go in spurts where he’s got tons of appearances and acting gigs and different stuff going on that keeps him out of town. But lately he’s been good. There’s been more weeks than not that he’s been in town. He’s been getting his conditioning workouts in and watching workouts and hanging out.”
