UFC 237 | Returning Bethe Correia: 'The division needs me'

It has been six years since former UFC title challenger, Bethe ‘Pitbull’ Correia picked up a victory in her native country of Brazil. However, she looks to change that come this Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro. At UFC 237, Correia will make her return to action when she takes on Mexico’s Irene Aldana. For the 14-fight veteran in Correia, this will be her first fight since she headlined UFC Singapore opposite Holly Holm in June 2017. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, she suffered defeat that night via third-round knockout.

Former UFC bantamweight title challenger Bethe Correia was supposed to battle Irene Aldana at UFC 227 in Los Angeles, California this Saturday. Unfortunately, the California State Athletic Commission announced that Correia’s vision wasn’t on point, which prompted the UFC to remove her from the matchup as a precaution. Even though she was cleared by multiple doctors. Speaking in a Wednesday Instagram post, Correia explained her withdrawal from UFC 227. Suffice it to say that she’s disappointed.

Former UFC bantamweight title challenger Bethe Correia was planning on returning to action this January, when she expected to fight Mexico’s Irene Aldana. Regrettably, Correia has apparently gone through an accident, and has been sidelined due to an emergency surgery. The Brazilian fighter updated on this unfortunate turn of events in a Monday morning Instagram post.

On Saturday, the UFC returned to Singapore with UFC Fight Night 111. In the main event of this anticipated card, which aired entirely on Fight Pass, former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Bethe Correia stepped onto the canvas with former champion Holly Holm. Unfortunately for Correia and her fans, this one did not go her way, as Holm put her down with a head kick in the third frame. In the wake of this disappointing loss to Holm, Correia took to Instagram with a statement, congratulating Holm and promising to be back stronger.

A women’s bantamweight bout between Bethe Correia and Marion Reneau took place on tonight’s UFC Fight Night 106 main card in Brazil. Round one begins and Reneau starts off quickly with a front kick. Bethe catches a second kick and delivers a couple of punches. Marion pulls her leg free and attacks with another kick. Bethe replies with a counter right hand. Both women seem more than happy to exchange on their feet. Marion with a left, Bethe replies with a right hand. Both women are connecting with good shots. Reneau lands a combination and then a hard leg kick. Bethe replies with a crisp right. She is only landing one shot at a time however while Reneau is landing some combos. Bethe scores a late takedown and winds up in half guard. Round one comes to an end.

Ahead of her ‘UFC Fight Night: Fortaleza’ scrap against Marion Reneau tonight, Bethe Correia is looking for an eventual rematch with Ronda Rousey after she found herself knocked out in just 34 seconds by the former champ two years ago. Leading up to that fight, Correia was hailed as the most dangerous fighter Rousey had ever fought given her impressive knockout power. When the pair finally stepped in the Octagon in August of 2015, it took under a minute for Rousey to knock Correia out cold in what was one of the most destructive WMMA knockouts in history.

This past weekend, Bethe Correia made her successful return to the Octagon on the preliminary card of UFC 203, where she defeated Jessica Eye via split decision. The win put Correia in the win column once again, snapping her 2-fight losing streak that saw her get KOd by Ronda Rousey in the main event of UFC 190, and then drop a split decision to Raquel Pennington earlier this year.

Bethe Correia may have lasted only 34 seconds against Ronda Rousey during their UFC 190 title fight, but the Brazilian has been extremely vocal about Rousey ever since. Rousey hasn’t fought since her knockout loss to Holly Holm back at UFC 193 and hasn’t had a fight lined up since relinquishing the belt to Holm a year ago. In fact, Dana White hasn’t been able to give a timeline for Rousey’s return, which may not happen until 2017, if at all.

A women’s bantamweight bout that would surely produce fireworks is being targeted for September’s pay-per-view event in Cleveland, as Combate is reporting that a fight between Bethe Correia and Jessica Eye is in the works for UFC 203. Bethe Correia (9-2 MMA) is coming off back-to-back losses in her two most recent octagon appearances. The Brazilian was knocked out cold by Ronda Rousey in her bid for the title at UFC 190, and most recently lost a close split-decision to Raquel Pennington in April.
