Earlier this year, Velasquez was booked on an attempted murder charge after shooting at a car in traffic. Over the following weeks, details emerged as to why the normally quiet former champion took action. Velasquez was reportedly shooting at Harry Goularte Jr., who is accused of molesting one of his family members over 100 times. Instead of hitting him, he struck the man’s stepfather.

The belief is that the intended target was Harry Goularte, who has been accused of molesting Cain’s young son.

It was Cain Velasquez who entered into a high speed chase and fired shots into the vehicle Goularte and others were in, who has been charged with attempted murder as well as other charges. It was Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, who was injured in the incident.  Valesquez was incensed by the fact that Goularte had allegedly abused a minor child, a relative of the fighter, and was subsequently released on bail.

After news came out that Velasquez shot at a man who was recently charged with molesting a close relative of his, the MMA community rallied around the former heavyweight champ. They called for him to be freed from jail and fans started a GoFundMe to help offset the cost for his legal team. At least two legal fund campaigns have been shut down, GoFundMe confirmed citing a violation of terms of service.

According to reports, Cain Velasquez spent Monday night, February 28th in jail. Velasquez, 39, has been arrested and booked on an attempted murder charge. Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (14-3 MMA) is said to have been involved in a shooting which took place on Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue, near Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill, California, at approximately 3pm which left one man injured.
