Josh Thomson scolds UFC for 'bullsh***ing with' Cain Velasquez

Tom Taylor - October 24, 2018

It’s been a long, long time since we’ve seen former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in the Octagon. Since July of 2016, to be exact. Considering Cain Velasquez is one of the best heavyweights in MMA history — arguably the sport’s best heavyweight outright — that’s a real shame.

Junior dos Santos interested in 4th fight with Cain Velasquez, questions former champ's whereabouts

Tom Taylor - August 24, 2018

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos is once again in view of a heavyweight title shot, thanks to a nice decision win over Blagoy Ivanov in his last fight. And now that Daniel Cormier has defeated Stipe Miocic, who derailed dos Santos’s title dreams in 2017, the path to gold looks even clearer. In terms of his next fight, Junior dos Santos has a few options. One option is rising Australian contender Tai Tuivasa, who he’s gone back-and-forth with on Twitter. Another, he believes, is former champion Cain Velasquez, who he’s 1-2 with across three previous bouts.

Daniel Cormier discusses potential fights with Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez

Tom Taylor - April 16, 2018

On July 7, in the main event of UFC 226, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will return to the heavyweight division to battle reigning champion Stipe Miocic. If Cormier is successful in this momentous showdown, he’ll become the UFC heavyweight champion, which will of course open the door to more massive opportunities in the division. Of those opportunities, its arguable that none would be bigger than a showdown with former UFC heavyweight champ and current WWE star Brock Lesnar—something UFC President Dana White has recently alluded to.

Cain Velasquez discusses possible move to light heavyweight, gives timeframe for return

Tom Taylor - January 30, 2018

This July, at UFC 226, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will return to his former haunts – the heavyweight division – where he’ll take on reigning champ Stipe Miocic in an effort to become a two-division champ.  While Cormier’s move to heavyweight would seem like it steps on the toes of his friend and training partner Cain Velasquez, Velasquez recently assured all was well in a Tweet. Like always, I’m gonna be in the gym everyday to help my brother @dc_mma become the next heavyweight champ at #UFC226. Once he wins, things could get interesting. #AndNew #WeAreAKA #GonnaGetMyBeltBack

Daniel Cormier hints that Cain Velasquez could drop to light heavyweight

Tom Taylor - January 29, 2018

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier’s next fight will not be in the light heavyweight division, but at heavyweight, where he will battle reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in an effort to become a two-division champion. Cormier’s taking a title shot at heavyweight, of course, would seem to step on the toes of his long-time friend and training partner, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Cain Velasquez Issues a Very Interesting Statement on Daniel Cormier Fighting Stipe Miocic

Justin Golightly - January 27, 2018

In case you haven’t heard the news, maybe you need to sit down. UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is going to challenge Stipe Miocic for his UFC heavyweight belt in July after they coach a season of The Ultimate Fighter. We aren’t kidding. This is really happening. While this is insane, Cormier’s teammate Cain Velasquez may be hinting at something even crazier. Even the UFC’s official Twitter account was confused at what was going on. Either that, or they’re cleverly stirring the speculation pot. Like always, I’m gonna be in the gym everyday to help my brother @dc_mma become the next heavyweight champ at #UFC226. Drake Riggs - January 15, 2018

It’s officially fight week for what may very well be the most highly anticipated heavyweight fight of all time. UFC 220 takes place this Saturday in Boston, Massachusetts and is headlined by the reigning champion who’s looking to make history, Stipe Miocic when he takes on the frighteningly powerful rising star, Francis Ngannou. Before Ngannou earned his shot by knocking out the top contender, Alistair Overeem in devastating fashion, the former multiple time kingpin of the big men, Cain Velasquez was expected to be Miocic’s next challenger upon his return. Unfortunately for Velasquez, he has been riddled with injuries throughout his MMA career. For the most part, it began after he initially became champion in 2010 after defeating Brock Lesnar then has been a continual trend since then.

Daniel Cormier wonders what Cain Velasquez could have accomplished without injuries

Tom Taylor - December 13, 2017

Cain Velasquez is one of the greatest heavyweights ever to compete in mixed martial arts. As a two-time former UFC heavyweight champion, and a fighter who has mauled top-flight opponents like Junior dos Santos (twice), Brock Lesnar, Ben Rothwell, Travis Browne, Cheick Kongo, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (twice), and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, there is simply no denying his status as one of the best heavyweights to ever do it. Unfortunately, Velasquez might also go down by one of the great what-ifs in MMA history, as an irrefutable top talent whose heyday was riddled with career-joggling injuries. Yes, as great as he is, it’s possible he’s already spent his best years on the on the sidelines. At least, that’s what his chief training partner Daniel Cormier seems to be worrying.

Tom Taylor - December 11, 2017

It has been a long, long time since we’ve seen former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in the cage. To be more precise, it’s been since he mauled Travis Browne to a first-round TKO in early July of 2016. The reason for Velasquez’s prolonged absence from the cage is his continued struggle with injury. After being forced out of a planned December 2016 rematch with former champion Fabricio Werdum, Velasquez underwent surgery, and has not been heard from much since.

Heated Cain Velasquez goes off on Jon Jones

Tom Taylor - October 24, 2017

Shortly after Jon Jones knocked out Daniel Cormier to reclaim the UFC light heavyweight title, it was announced that he had failed a pre-fight drug test. As a result, his knockout win was overturned and the light heavyweight strap was returned to Cormier. While Cormier is once again the champ, and Jones is facing a potentially career-ending suspension, Cormier’s training partner Cain Velasquez is still pretty displeased with the way things shook out. The former heavyweight champ went off on Jon Jones during a recent media appearance in Seoul, South Korea.

Luke Rockhold hints that Cain Velasquez could return for title fight very soon

Tom Taylor - August 3, 2017

It has now been more than a year since Cain Velasquez’s last fight, a July 2016 mauling of the ever-dangerous Travis Browne. This, of course, is not for lack of trying. The former heavyweight champ was briefly scheduled for a December rematch with Fabricio Werdum, but unfortunately withdrew from this fight with the latest in the long string of injuries that has marred his recent career. For a time, it sounded as though it could be awhile before the oft-injured Velasquez stepped back into the cage. Apparently, however, he might be back in action quite soon.

Cain Velasquez updates on his fighting future: "I can't provide a timeline" for return

Tom Taylor - March 14, 2017

Cain Velasquez, who is a two-time former UFC heavyweight champion, stands out as one of the very best heavyweights on earth. When he is healthy, he is one of the most ferocious big men to ever rattle the foundations of the Octagon. Regrettably, the former champ’s career has been marred by repeated injuries, which have caused him to withdraw from key fights and spend long stretches on the bench. Velasquez’s latest injury-related SNAFU occurred in December, when he was scheduled for a rematch with Fabricio Werdum, the man he lost the heavyweight title to. Though he apparently had the intention to compete with a severe back injury, he was ultimately deemed unfit to fight, and forced out of this planned showdown by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Cain Velasquez 'rarely' training according to coach, won't fight soon

bjpenndotcom - March 10, 2017

To close out 2016, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez looked to build momentum on his UFC 200 win over Travis Browne, which returned him to the win column following his UFC 188 loss to Fabricio Werdum. Velasquez was set to step into the Octagon for a rematch with Werdum, to determine the heavyweight #1 contender, however during the course of fight week, Velasquez’ back injury raised some questions, which resulted in the NSAC pulling him from the fight after determining that he was unfit to fight.
