Chael Sonnen laughs off Jorge Masvidal’s “fake gangster” remark: “I will not let him get close”
UFC analyst Chael Sonnen has responded to Jorge Masvidal’s recent threat toward him.
‘Gamebred’ recently announced his intention to come out of retirement, and resume his fighting career. Jorge Masvidal famously promised to retire, with a loss to Gilbert Burns last April. The former UFC title challenger kept his word, after losing to ‘Durinho’ by unanimous decision.
Well, Jorge Masvidal kept his word for a bit less than a year. As of now, the former UFC star is yet to sign a deal to return to the cage or ring. However, Masvidal has shown interest in a potential rematch with Nate Diaz, as well as a fight with ‘BMF’ titleholder Justin Gaethje.
However, earlier this week, Jorge Masvidal called out Chael Sonnen. Much like the former UFC welterweight, ‘The American Gangster’ is currently retired as a fighter, and has been for some time. Sonnen retired after a knockout loss to Lyoto Machida in the Bellator cage, nearly five years ago.
That being said, Jorge Masvidal would love to fight Chael Sonnen upon his return. On The MMA Hour earlier this week, ‘Gamebred’ tore into the retired fighter, calling him a “fake gangster”, and calling him out for steroid use. On YouTube, Sonnen responded with a video of his own, mocking Masvidal.

In the video, Chael Sonnen questioned if he was called out, or threatened by Jorge Masvidal. Regardless of which one it is, ‘The American Gangster’ will have his guard up. Due to Masvidal’s recent comments, Sonnen can’t let him get close.
“I’m not sure if Jorge Masvidal has challenged me.” Chael Sonnen stated in a recent video on his YouTube channel. “I kept being told that. ‘Hey, Jorge Masvidal challenged you’ and I didn’t know if I was challenged or threatened. If I was a competitive fighter I would understand, hey, I’ve been challenged, by a guy much littler than [me]. But I’ve been challenged nonetheless.”
He continued, “But, because I’m not a competitive fighter, I felt I had been threatened. Either way, policy will still be applied. I will not let him get close. I cannot trust Jorge Masvidal. Jorge Masvidal will be in Miami next week, where I will be. Jorge Masvidal will be at a fight next week, where I will be. I mean, it sounds to me like we’re starting to bring pieces together. Now, he will have to wave to me, I will have to send up an usher to bring him a few levels down to get closer to the action where I will be seated.”
“But, we can have that chat. I will be the person in the nice trim suit, with the somewhat dimmed glasses… I assume he will be the thug with the hood up, that I need to have my eye out for.” Chael Sonnen concluded. “Jorge Masvidal tried to come at me and call me a ‘fake gangster’. I have more felonies than he does.”
