Chael Sonnen speaks about UFC return rumors
While Chael Sonnen hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since his TKO loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 167 in November of 2013, there has been much speculation as to whether or not Sonnen would return to the Octagon once his 2-year suspension is up.
With UFC 200 rapidly approaching, many guessed that Sonnen would make an emphatic return to the Octagon at UFC 200, however Sonnen has stated that he is in fact retired, and won’t be returning.
Recently, Sonnen’s manager stated that he believes Sonnen would return ‘for the right fight.’ This sparked quite a few debates amongst MMA fans who played ‘what if’.
Sonnen spoke on Submission Radio to discuss the rumors of his comeback, saying:
“He does believe that. He argues with me all the time, and it’s very playful. I always tell him, ‘my race is ran, and I’m done,’ and he says ‘yeah I don’t believe ya, I think you’re gonna come back. I know you’re in the gym blah blah blah,’ and so he is sharing his opinion. The only push back I would give is that he said ‘for the right fight,’ I’m not a bully. I’m not coming in to fight some dinosaur like Vitor or Rich Franklin. If I come back I’m going to whip all their asses – and I’m not coming back – but if I did, it wouldn’t be ‘for the right fight.’ I would come back to fight anybody in front of me.”
When asked to clarify that he would not be returning when his suspension was up, Sonnen stated
“That is correct.”
