The UFC finally returned to Canada for the first time since 2019 as the promotion headed to Vancouver, British Columbia for UFC 289. In the main event, Amanda Nunes was looking to defend her bantamweight title against Irene Aldana who took the fight on short notice after Julianna Pena was forced out of the scrap. The co-main event saw a pivotal lightweight bout go down as Charles Oliveira took on Beneil Dariush.

Islam Makhachev will once again be the betting favorite over Charles Oliveira. At UFC 280, Makhachev opened as a -300 betting favorite and closed around -245 in a fight he ended up winning by second-round submission. Since then, Makhchev beat Alexander Volkanovski to defend his belt while Oliveira returned to the win column at UFC 289 with a first-round TKO win over Beneil Dariush.

This past Saturday, June 10th, saw Charles Oliveira (34-9 MMA) vs Beneil Dariush (22-5 MMA) in the lightweight co-main event. UFC President Dana White has offered his two cents on Charles Oliveira’s UFC 289 performance and what could be next for him. Oliveira was in action on June 10. In the co-main event of UFC 289, “do Bronx” sent Beneil Dariush crashing to the mat courtesy of his barrage of strikes. Oliveira finished Dariush off with ground and pound for the first-round TKO win. It was a historic win for Oliveira as he extended his record for most finishes in the UFC at 20.

Nunes (22-5 MMA) was originally slated to have a trilogy fight with Julianna Pena at tonight’s event, but ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ was forced to withdraw from the contest due to injury. ‘The Lioness’ of course defeated Pena to reclaim the women’s bantamweight world title in her most recent effort at UFC 277.

Charles Oliveira wants Beneil Dariush to back his talk up and go to the ground with him. Ahead of UFC 289, both Oliveira and Dariush are confident in their skills and both believe they will be able to get a stoppage win on Saturday night. Yet, ahead of the fight, Dariush spoke to BJPENN.com and said he had no problem taking the fight to the ground if needed as he isn’t scared of Oliveira’s grappling.

Beneil Dariush doesn’t think his UFC 289 fight against Charles Oliveira is the ‘people’s’ main event. Once the UFC added Dariush vs. Oliveira to the card, many fans claimed that is the best fight on the card and the real main event. However, the actual headliner is Amanda Nunes defending her bantamweight title against Irene Aldana. Although Nunes is a sizeable betting favorite, Dariush says fans need to respect that title bout as he says getting to fight underneath Nunes is special.

Beneil Dariush is ready to just fight. Dariush was hoping to return in March against Charles Oliveira, but the fight didn’t get booked until May. However, after the Brazilian suffered a minor injury, the fight was pushed back until UFC 289 in June which was frustrating for Dariush.

Charles Oliveira believes Conor McGregor is afraid to fight him. Oliveira is set to return to the Octagon in the co-main event of UFC 289 against Beneil Darisuh. It’s the Brazilian’s first fight since suffering a submission loss to Islam Makhachev back in October for the lightweight title. It was a disappointing result for Oliveira to no longer be the champ, but after the loss, he thought he could still get a big fight and mentioned McGregor as a possibility.

UFC lightweight contender Beneil Dariush isn’t really expecting to fight Charles Oliveira later this year. The longtime lightweight contender has been out of the cage since his clash with Mateusz Gamrot in October. In that outing at UFC 280, Dariush scored a lopsided unanimous decision win over ‘Gamer’. That victory was his eighth in a row, having previously defeated names such as Tony Ferguson and Drew Dober in that stretch.

Last May, Oliveira was stripped of his lightweight gold for missing weight against Justin Gaethje.
