‘The Iceman’ is back. Chuck Liddell will compete in an MMA cage once again. But before he can do so, he’s going to have to re-apply for his MMA licenses. Being a native of California, Liddell will likely be applying to the California State Athletic Commission first. Despite now being 48 years of age, CSAC Executive Director, Andy Foster told MMAJunkie that they’ll allow the former UFC light heavyweight champion to fight again as long as he’s healthy enough to do so.

If that wasn’t shocking enough, he had to go on to state that he wants to fight Jon Jones. And he’s not joking… As one might expect, Jones had something to say about the bizarre call out as he took to Twitter a few hours after the announcement.

The idea of Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz fighting again brings out a lot of mixed options. Both men seem to be down for it, but the time and place is what could be a massive hold-up on the trilogy. Bellator president Scott Coker said he’s interested but may not be able to promote it due to Liddell’s contract with the UFC, which prompted Ortiz to talk to the UFC about it. This led to company man Chael Sonnen to blast the former opponent for lack of loyalty. “Tito [Ortiz], after all Scott Coker did for you – I mean they ran you around, you were the face of the company, you were main-eventing, you were making a bunch of money – that’s your response? You’re gonna come out of retirement, and you’re gonna fight Chuck [Liddell] in the UFC? You don’t give that to Coker? You’re gonna do it in the UFC? You finished your career at Bellator. You got treated great at Bellator. You come to the Bellator shows.”

It seems like every year there is a tease that Chuck Liddell may come out of retirement for one or two more fights. This year, it seems to be a fight with former rival and UFC light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz. However, Bellator president Scott Coker is on the fence about the idea. It’s not that he wouldn’t put on the trilogy between Liddell and Ortiz, he’s just that he literally doesn’t know if he can. “My understanding is that Chuck [Liddell] is still under contract with the UFC. I’m not sure. I just thought that to be true. I don’t know the details, but when he retired, I think the contract freezes and they maintain some rights. Listen, is it a fight that would be fun to watch [between Liddell and Tito Ortiz]? I think if they both pass a physical and Tito was healthy and his neck was healthy and he was able to perform at a high level, and they were fighting, to me is it interesting? I would definitely watch it.”

That said, the former UFC light heavyweight champion and MMA legend would be willing to step back into the UFC’s Octagon for a third fight with his long-time rival Chuck Liddell. In fact, upon learning of Liddell’s apparent interest in a comeback, Ortiz broached the idea with the UFC. Apparently, however, this idea was met with immediate doubt that Liddell would ever be allowed to fight again.

It seems like every couple of months, rumors start up again that MMA legend Chuck Liddell would end his retirement and return to fight at least one more time. The latest inkling was an Instagram post from Wanderlei Silva, but it looks like his previous feud with one Chael Sonnen is still very much alive and well. The two evidently got into some sort of altercation during the press tour for Bellator 192 which takes place this Saturday. Liddell may or may not be ready to come back to the cage, but Sonnen was ready to throw down right then and there. “I come into the dressing room and there was Chuck [Liddell], face-to-face, and it was awkward. I was doing [The Rich Eisen Show] and he told me, ‘You got a message for Chuck? He’ll be here tomorrow.’ So I gave him a message to Chuck, thinking he would be there tomorrow. Turned out Chuck was in the back, watching it on a monitor, with my mother.”

It’s long been rumored that Chuck Liddell was thinking about coming back to the sport. He’s beat around the bush and never given a straight answer over the years, but nevertheless the talk keeps coming. More recently, Chael Sonnen and the legend has developed a sort of feud, but Liddell promises there is nothing to that. He did say however, that he would come out of retirement as early as tomorrow if the price was good. Could Liddell be put on UFC 219? Not long ago, there seemed to be real reason to believe that MMA legend Chuck Liddell was ready to make a comeback. Most rumors on this subject suggested that this possible Liddell comeback would occur in the Bellator cage, and that his opponent would be three-time UFC title challenger and current Bellator star Chael Sonnen. Even Sonnen believed this is the way things were going to down, as he repeated eluded to this fight in interviews and on social media. Unfortunately, “The American Gangster” now feels this much-discussed scrap is a no-go.

Were this potential comeback to occur, it would likely go down in the Bellator cage, rather than the UFC’s Octagon, where Liddell became a legend.
