Last night in the co-main event of UFC 212, formertitle challengers Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz squared off in a key women’s strawweight scrap. Gadelha was able to get Karolina down early in round one and quickly took the back of her Polish opponent. From there, the Brazilian locked in her hooks and then secured a rear-naked choke which forced Kowalkiewicz to tapout.

Back in August of 2015, former World Series of Fighting strawweight champion Jessica Aguilar made her long-awaited debut in the UFC’s Octagon. Her opponent in this Octagon debut was top ranked contender Claudia Gadelha. Regrettably for Aguilar and her fans, Gadelha came out on top that night, capturing a hard-fought unanimous decision win. Almost two years later, however, the loss still bothers Aguilar, as she was dealing with a fairly serious injury throughout the fight. Given this unfortunate hinderance to her performance, she’s been eager for a rematch with Gadelha ever since.

Earlier this month, reports of a planned strawweight bout between former title challengers Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz began to surface. While we knew this was a fight both women wanted, however, it was not known for sure if they would actually fight. Now, it’s official. On Monday morning, the UFC announced that this key strawweight showdown will occur at UFC 212, in sun-soaked Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on June 3.

Karolina Kowalkiewicz entered her UFC 205 title fight with strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk with a perfect, 10-0 record and a good deal of hype behind her. Yet while she was able to put up a good fight against the champ – even dropping her on one occasion – she ultimately came up short, losing a unanimous decision. It’s no secret that former strawweight champion Carla Esparza and former strawweight title challenger Claudia Gadelha aren’t big fans of one another. Having been scheduled to fight to no avail several times in the past, the two talented fighters have plenty of unfinished business, and probably won’t stop beefing till they get their hands on each other in the cage. Their latest quarrel occurred on Instagram. This time around, Gadelha was the instigator, lambasting Esparza for trying to sell her motorcycle to cover her medical bills (though she may not actually have to do so).

This past weekend on the main card of ‘UFC Fight Night: Sao Paulo’ on Fox Sports 1, top ranked women’s strawweight Claudia Gadelha stepped into the Octagon against Cortney Casey for a highly anticipated strawweight showdown. For Gadelha, the bout was a chance for her to return to the win column after dropping a unanimous decision to Joanna Jedrzejczyk back in July in a highly anticipated rematch. For Casey, the fight was an opportunity to extend her 2-fight win streak which had seen her defeat Cristina Stanciu and Ronda Marcos over the course of 2016. Gadelha dominated the fight from start to finish, not only landing more significant strikes than Casey, but also landing 6 takedowns on Casey as she went 100% on her takedown attempts.

Back in July, top ranked women’s strawweight Claudia Gadelha stepped into the Octagon in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Joanna vs. Team Claudia’ finale for a highly anticipated rematch with strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Gadelha came out strong in the opening rounds, landing several big punches to Jedrzejczyk as the champ continued to counter with a significant volume of strikes. Ultimately, as the fight progressed, Jedrzejczyk’s cardio proved to be the difference maker as she continued to land an impressive volume of strikes en route to an impressive unanimous decision win.

In late 2014, Brazil’s Claudia Gadelha lost a hotly debated split decision to Poland’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk. In July of this year, the two women went at it again, this time with Jedrzejczyk’s well-guarded strawweight title on the line. While Gadelha started strong in this rematch, she ultimately faded down the stretch, and surrendered another decision loss to her Polish rival as a result. Now an unfortunate 0-2 against the strawweight division’s reigning champion, Gadelha finds herself in a bit of a difficult position. That said, the talented Brazilian strawweight appears eager to return to her winning ways, as she has announced she’ll be taking on “Cast Iron” Cortney Casey at UFC Fight Night 100 this November 19 in her native Brazil. Gadelha announced this fight on her Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon.

On the heels of Claudia Gadelha’s unanimous decision loss to reigning strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the beginning of July, top ranked women’s strawweight Claudia Gadelha has parted ways with her longtime gym at Nova Uniao. While details are pretty scarce at the present time, BloodyElbow is reporting that Gadelha and Nova Uniao head coach Andre Pederneiras had an argument following Gadelha’s loss to Joanna Jedrzejczyk. According to the report, Gadelha was unhappy with how her training went leading up to the fight, which she believed resulted in her loss.

Friday evening in the main event of the TUF 23 Finale, Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Claudia Gadelha had their highly anticipated grudge match for the women’s strawweight title. Gadelha came out of the gate strong, putting the pressure on the champ through the first two rounds. Ultimately however, Jedrzejczyk’s cardio and striking throughout the second half of the fight helped her to retain her belt by winning via unanimous decision.

This week, Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Claudia Gadelha will have their highly anticipated rematch, this time for the UFC women’s strawweight championship. The pair’s first fight, which was arguably one of the closest fights in UFC history, took place back in 2014 and saw Jedrzejczyk win via split decision. Since then, Jedrzejczyk has gone on to win, and defend her title twice, while Gadelha bounced back to defeat Jessica Aguilar via unanimous decision nearly a year ago.
