Report: CM Punk More Than Doubled UFC 203's PPV Revenue

Tom Taylor - September 13, 2016

Last Saturday, on the main card of UFC 203, CM Punk fell short in his long-awaited UFC debut, tapping out to Mickey Gall rear-naked choke just 2:14 into the first round. From a competitive vantage point his MMA foray was a pretty significant failure. From a fiscal perspective, however, Punk’s UFC debut is looking like it could have been a massive success – and not just because he made bank with a disclosed purse of $500,000. It’s also looking like Punk’s presence on UFC 203’s main card may have driven pay-per-view sales far beyond most estimates.

CM Punk had some words of wisdom for the man who beat him on Saturday night. Even though Mickey Gall submitted the former WWE superstar in the very first round of their UFC 203 contest, Punk shared what he told him immediately following the end of their fight. “Throughout his interviews, he’d say things like, in speaking about himself, that he didn’t belong in the UFC and he didn’t belong on the main card,” said Punk.

Last night, the UFC took over Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena with UFC 203. Though UFC 203 was headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champion Stipe Miocic and challenger Alistair Overeem, the event was perhaps most anticipated for the MMA debut of WWE star CM Punk, who took on 24-year-old prospect Mickey Gall on the evening’s main card. Given the fact that Punk possessed no real martial arts experience before signing with the UFC, very few people gave him a chance in his bout with Gall. The expectation was that the former pro wrestler would be dominated by his young foe, and when the cage door closed in Cleveland, that’s precisely what happened.
