Cody Garbrandt opens up on backstage incident with Dominick Cruz
Cody Garbrandt was in the final stages of preparing for his UFC 202 fight with Takeya Mizugaki when he decided to approach Dominick Cruz backstage during fight week to talk some trash.
The pair’s rivalry has been a very public one, which reached new heights when Cruz defeated Garbrandt’s training partner and mentor, Urijah Faber, in the co-main event of UFC 199. Shortly after the fight, Garbrandt knocked out Thomas Almeida, and called out the champ.
Ranked #8 at the time, Garbrandt was booked to fight Takeya Mizugaki in what many believed to be a title eliminator fight for ‘No Love’. Ultimately, he knocked Mizugaki out in the very first round, setting up a potential fight with Cruz.
Following the win, Garbrandt spoke on The MMA Hour to discuss a pre-fight exchange he had with Cruz backstage that saw security intervene:
“My response to his critiquing is that he’s a little b*tch, first off,” Garbrandt said Monday on The MMA Hour. “And he’s scared. I went up to him before the fight, we walked in, we’re getting security patted down. He’s was sitting around there. I just went up to him and let him know, hey, I’m going to knock Takeya out and then you’re next. And you should’ve seen how scared that dude was. He was looking around to see if security was going to break it up.
“And he wants to bring up daddy issues and this and that? He was so scared that his voice was squeaking out like a little b*tch when he was trying to talk sh*t back to me. Oh man, it was hilarious. I felt the energy of how scared he was, and he’s a dead man when I lock horns with him. It’s just a matter of time.”
So far there’s been no word yet on whether or not the UFC will book Cruz vs. Garbrandt, or give Garbrandt a #1 contender fight.
Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
