AUDIO | Gunnar Nelson unsure if teammate Conor McGregor will ever return to UFC after Floyd Mayweather fight
What could possibly top Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather’s superfight boxing match? At this point, it doesn’t look like any fight in the UFC will get “The Notorious” the kind of money that he will be compensated for in the Mayweather bout.
McGregor’s longtime teammate Gunnar Nelson recently spoke with Submission Radio and isn’t too sure what “The Notorious” will do after the biggest fight that is out there for the current UFC lightweight champion.
“Not really, but I don’t think we would fight ever, to be honest. We’ve been training partners since we were 17 and I don’t think that would ever happen,” Nelson said (at 22:35 of the video) if they were to both be fighting in the welterweight division. “He would just focus on something else, to be honest. You never know what he’s going to do next. If he beats Mayweather, I’m not sure that he will ever fight again, to be honest. I don’t know, but I could see him just floating off and doing something else crazy. But otherwise, maybe he’ll fight Khabib or something next if Khabib is in shape. I don’t know, there’s something wrong with his (Khabib’s) kidneys or something after that cut. We’ll see. I don’t know what’s he gonna do. But he’s just focusing on one thing at a time and right now it’s Floyd Mayweather and I’m looking forward to that myself.”
When asked to dive deeper into his thoughts on McGregor’s future, Nelson said, “I’m basing it on that he wants to go bigger every time. And if he beats Mayweather – like, he’s taken the two belts, and then he beats Mayweather in this huge superfight, and I’m not sure what he’s gonna see as a next challenge or a next thing that he wants to do. I just don’t really see what he wants to come into the UFC again for. I’m not sure. Obviously, there’s always something. But he’s also having a baby and yeah, I’m not sure where his mind is gonna be. He’s gonna have a ton of money anyway. We’ll see. Maybe he’ll do another boxing match or something if it goes well. Maybe he’ll get more money there and be more interested in that. I don’t know. We’ll see, I guess. I have no idea.”
With UFC President Dana White thinking McGregor will make around $75 million for the fight against Mayweather, do you think “The Notorious” will come back to fight in the UFC? Let’s get your thoughts in the comment section!
