Conor McGregor sends a message to ‘afraid’ Floyd Mayweather
After Conor McGregor was submitted by Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 196 back in March, there was much speculation as to what the UFC featherweight champ’s next move would be. One of the more intriguing options that was immediately available to McGregor after he was pulled from the UFC 200 card for refusing to fulfill his media obligations was to make the jump to boxing for a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.
Both men traded shots back and forth in the media, which resulted in both men verbally agreeing to fight. While talks began as very ‘hypothetical’, things quickly progressed, with an ESPN affiliate even going as far as to announce the date for the McGregor-Mayweather fight. With that being said however, McGregor ultimately ended up signing to fight Nate Diaz in a rematch at UFC 202 in August, which McGregor won via majority decision.
During a recent Q&A on social media, McGregor spoke about a potential boxing match with Mayweather, saying:
“Floyd is afraid of fighting. Floyd doesn’t want to fight. Floyd wants a boxing match. And I’ve already said ‘No problem. Get my f*cking money!’ and when he gets my money then we can box in this boxing match under these set of specific rules that will keep you alive. So, I’m here. Where’s my money? Because if you keep dropping my name and you haven’t got my money then I am going to show up at your front door. So we will see. But Floyd does not want to fight me. Floyd wants a match under a specific set of rules. I don’t need rules. So I’m open. Let’s see what happens. Right now it is just talk.”
Following his UFC 202 win over Diaz, Mayweather stated that the door had likely closed for the two men to fight. McGregor however, has remained open to boxing Mayweather, repeatedly telling the Boxing legend to get him the proper amount of money, and then the pair can fight.
