Report | Fighters forced off UFC 223 as a result of Conor McGregor mayhem will be paid

Tom Taylor - April 6, 2018

Conor McGregor‘s Thursday afternoon rampage in Brooklyn, New York absolutely decimated the UFC 223 lineup. In one fell swoop, the crazed star and his cronies caused the cancellation of a whopping three scheduled bouts. The first bout to go was Artem Lobov’s undercard scrap with Alex Caceres. Lobov was removed from the fight for his role in the chaos at the host venue, and no replacement opponent was sought for Caceres.

Yesterday afternoon, Conor McGregor arrived at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York—the host venue for UFC 223—and all hell broke loose. Even by McGregor standards, it was a terrible scene, as the Irishman and his lackeys attacked a bus containing a number of UFC 223 fighters. In video footage of the fracas, McGregor could be seen pelting the bus with whatever he could get his hands on, including a dolly, which he used to smash the back window of the vehicle.

Injured Tony Ferguson rips back at Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz

Russell Sai - April 3, 2018

It is still hard to believe that Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov will not be fighting this weekend at UFC 223. Ferguson was involved in a “freak accident” and suffered an injury on Friday at a “UFC-obligated media event” where he tore a ligament in his knee. Ferguson was forced to pull out of the main event fight taking place this weekend against Nurmagomedov, which marks the fourth time that a UFC matchup between the two UFC lightweights has been canceled.

Conor McGregor releases savage response to UFC 223 main event drama! Yesterday the mixed martial arts world was left in shock after Brett Okamoto and Ariel Helwani reported that current UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson had suffered a knee injury and would no longer be able to compete against Khabib Nurmagomedov at this Saturday’s UFC 223 event in Brooklyn.

Khabib Nurmagomedov wanted "Burger King" McGregor to step in at UFC 223, but happy to fight Holloway

Tom Taylor - April 2, 2018

With Tony Ferguson out with a leg injury, Khabib Nurmagomedov will now fight UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway in the UFC 223 main event. While he’s happy to have received a replacement opponent at all, he said his first choice in this regard was Conor McGregor. “I told them first, ‘hey, where is this Burger King, [bring] this Burger King here,'” Nurmagomedov told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I need this guy, because he put a Tweet a couple weeks ago saying ‘stay ready.’ Now where is this guy? Six days to make weight? It’s a [good amount of days] to make weight. It’s not like two, three. It’s six he can weight. Bring this guy.”

Dana White explains why Conor McGregor wasn't Khabib Nurmagomedov's replacement opponent

Tom Taylor - April 2, 2018

By this point, we’ve all woken up, pinched ourselves, and come to grips with the unfortunate reality that Tony Ferguson’s UFC 223 withdrawal was not an elaborate April Fools joke or a nightmare. The interim lightweight champ really has been forced out of the fight with a leg injury—a leg injury he sustained while he was walking, if you can believe that. The good news is that we get a solid consolation prize. Nurmagomedov will still fight on the card, taking on a beefed up version of UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway, who steps up on just six days notice. The two will battle for the undisputed lightweight title.

Conor McGregor staying ready, working on wrestling

Tom Taylor - March 30, 2018

UFC 223, which goes down April 7 in Brooklyn, NY, will be headlined by one of the biggest lightweight fights ever, as interim champ Tony Ferguson collides with undefeated contender Khabib Nurmagomedov. That is, unless disaster strikes, and one of the two men is forced out of the fight. This is what’s happened every single time the two lightweight stars have been scheduled to fight previously, and we’re all counting down the days to UFC 223, praying that it doesn’t happen again… If disaster does strike, and one fighter is forced out of the UFC 223 main event, it seems possible that Conor McGregor will attempt to step in and replace them. Whether the UFC and New York Athletic Commission would allow such a thing is difficult to say, but the Irish star is apparently keen to “stay ready,” and also seems to be working hard on his wrestling. Given the insane wrestling pedigree of both Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, this is definitely interesting…
