Former two division UFC champion Conor McGregor (21-4 MMA) fell short in his attempt to hand current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov (27-0 MMA) the first loss of his mixed martial arts career at UFC 229. “The Eagle” was able to frustrate the Irish superstar with his wrestling for the majority of the opening three rounds, and even dropped McGregor with a right hand in round two.

On Saturday night, in the main event of the massive UFC 229 card, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov defended his title with a fourth-round submission win over former UFC lightweight and featherweight champ Conor McGregor. Unfortunately, however, that’s not where the violence ended. Moments after the fight came to a close, Khabib Nurmagomedov vaulted out of the cage and attacked Conor McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, which sparked a massive brawl between his and McGregor’s teams. The chaos swirled inside and outside of the cage, and it was several minutes before it was completely under control.

Over the weekend, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov picked up his first title defense — and the biggest win of his career — choking out former lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the first round. While Nurmagomedov’s win over McGregor was quite lopsided, it wasn’t enough to impress former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz. In Diaz’s eyes, Conor McGregor didn’t look like himself in the fight. He also finds Khabib Nurmagomedov’s fighting style ‘dirty.’

From there, he and Danis engaged in a brief scrap, trading punches until they were separated. Shortly thereafter, former UFC lightweight champion and current welterweight contender Rafael dos Anjos took to Twitter, where he trashed Dillon Danis for his role in this ugly, post-fight brawl.

Khabib Nurmagomedov took the high road at every turn leading up to the biggest fight of his career against Conor McGregor at UFC 229. However, after the deed was done and McGregor was stricken with defeat, that road violently collapsed, sending Nurmagomedov crashing into a crowd of bystanders like a loose wrecking ball. All hell broke loose at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas—from the arena floor to the hallways—with Nurmagomedov leading the charge of an all-out brawl between fight teams. The pre-fight banter that laid the foundation for the proposed biggest fight in MMA history culminated into a truly embarrassing and disappointing night for the sport.

At UFC 229, which goes down tonight in Las Vegas, Nevada, the former two-weight champion Conor McGregor will make his return to the Octagon to take on undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Given that this is a fight between the two best lightweights alive, it should come as no surprise that it has the combat sports community divided in their predictions.
