Since then, the Englishman was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and had to step away from the sport. However, fast forward to 2019 and Dan Hardy is now eyeing a return to the Octagon.

Dan Hardy believes a potential matchup between Ben Askren and Demian Maia is quite intriguing. Askren is coming off the first loss of his professional mixed martial arts career. He was knocked out in five seconds courtesy of Jorge Masvidal’s flying knee. This set a record for the fastest knockout in UFC history. Meanwhile, Maia is coming off a majority decision victory over Anthony Rocco Martin.

Jones is far and away the more technical, versatile fighter, which would seemingly leave Santos with few paths to victory. A Thiago Santos victory is, of course, a possibility — however slim.

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy has not fought since September of 2012, when he was pulled out of competition as the result of a rare heart disorder called Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome. The condition is not usually dangerous, but Hardy has been kept out of the cage ever since as a precaution. While Hardy has kept plenty busy in the years since, working as a commentator and analyst for the UFC, and even penning a book, it sounds like a return to the cage is in the cards. In an interview with Sherdog.com, the 36-year-old Nottingham native announced that he’s been cleared to fight again, should he so choose.

Last Saturday, on the UFC Moscow card, middleweight veteran CB Dollaway stepped into the cage with Russia’s Khalid Murtazaliev. The fight got tremendously ugly for the American. Toward the end of round two, CB Dollaway found himself in bottom position, absorbing a meteor shower of ground strikes unleashed by Murtazaliev. Before long, it became clear that Dollaway was in danger, as he absorbed repeated blows to the head, and failed to adequately defend himself. Despite this grim scene, referee Herb Dean did not stop the fight. Instead, he let the round end, at which point an exhausted, barely-conscious CB Dollaway essentially had to peeled off the canvas.

There was a time not all that long ago, however, that “The Outlaw” resided amongst the best welterweights on earth. He even battled Georges St-Pierre for gold, and survived the full 25 minutes with the welterweight great. Hardy’s prolonged absence from the cage has been caused, in large part, by a rare heart condition. Provided he can be cleared to compete again, however, he’s not opposed to coming back for one last bout. He would just need to find time to commit to his training camp.

It’s hard to imagine Dan Hardy without some sort of multi-screen set-up at his home like Batman, watching 20 different fights on tons of monitors while taking notes. MMA fighters trying to diversify their skills as analysts is prevalent now, but Hardy is one of the best. Since stepping away from MMA competition, Dan Hardy has slipped into the shoes of an analyst better than nearly anyone who has followed his footsteps. His Inside the Octagon breakdowns, as well as his work at the desk, solidified himself as a wizard behind the curtain who really knows what he’s talking about. The fruits of his labor have really paid off this time, following the latest announcement that he will join the UK and Irish broadcast of Conor McGregor boxing Floyd Mayweather.

Last weekend, in the main event of UFC 209, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley defended his title with a majority decision over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. While Woodley’s win was an important one, however, it was also incredibly close, and fairly unexciting as far as fights go. The slow nature of Woodley’s defeat of Thompson prompted backlash from many members of the MMA community, including UFC President Dana White. Another respected member of the MMA community to chime in on this fight was former welterweight title challenger turned analyst Dan Hardy.

UFC veteran Dan Hardy, who was recently cleared to return to the UFC after being sidelined with a heart condition for nearly 5 years, found himself in the crosshairs of Bellator MMA after he questioned the legitimacy of the Bellator 170 Chael Sonnen vs. Tito Ortiz fight. At a recent press conference, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker alluded to Hardy’s comments, stating that if people question the legitimacy of Bellator’s fights, Bellator’s parent company, Viacom, could get involved with their legal team.

With no UFC card last weekend, the MMA spotlight was fixed firmly on Bellator 170, which went down on Saturday night. This card was headlined by a light heavyweight fight between retiring MMA legend Tito Ortiz, and returning star Chael Sonnen. In advance of this fight, Sonnen assured it was one he’d wanted for years, and one he was determined to win. Despite all of this pre-fight talk, however, Sonnen could not have looked much worse on fight night, as he was soundly out-grappled by the aging Ortiz, and ultimately wound up tapping out to a poorly applied rear-naked choke just over two minutes into the fight.

It’s been a long and emotional journey for former UFC welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy. In the midst of a 2-fight win streak that saw him KO Duane Ludwig, and then pick up a unanimous decision win over Air Sadollah in 2012, Hardy was surprisingly pulled from his UFC on FOX 7 scrap with Matt Brown in 2013 after being diagnosed with a heart condition. For the past three years, hardy has been working towards fighting once again, in hopes of passing a medical screening and being cleared to return to the Octagon. In that time, ‘The Outlaw’ took up an analyst role with the UFC, as well as a commentary role on UFC Fight Pass events.

This past weekend, in the co-main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: Sacramento’, UFC prospects Sage Northcutt & Mickey Gall stepped into the Octagon for a highly anticipated showdown. Although Northcutt went into the fight with quite a bit more experience, it was the grappling of Gall that proved to be the difference maker.
