Dana White to meet with Conor McGregor soon, expects a summer return
During a recent appearance on the Jim Rome Show, UFC President Dana White said that he has plans to meet with Conor McGregor within a week.
“He and I are getting together very soon, within the next week, and we’re going to figure out what’s next for him” White said. “I see him fighting this summer”.
Conor McGregor has not competed in the UFC since losing to current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, in October of 2018. Nurmagomedov is reportedly expected to return at UFC 242 on September 7, against current interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier.
With Nurmagomedov’s schedule full, McGregor will have to look elsewhere for his next opponent and Dana White believes that the UFC Ottawa main event winner, Donald Cerrone, is an opponent who makes sense for “The Notorious” in his return.
Cerrone and McGregor were linked back in January after “Cowboy” defeated Alex Hernandez and called for a fight against the Irish superstar. The fight would fail to come to fruition after there was dispute between McGregor and the UFC as it was reported that the UFC wanted the fight to be in the co-main event slot of a pay-per-view.
Despite this, Dana White told Jim Rome that a fight between McGregor and Cerrone “makes sense.”
“The Cerrone fight makes sense,” he said. “There’s a couple different options out there for him. He [McGregor] was talking about the Cerrone fight at one point. I don’t really know but that fight makes sense.”
The two fighters have been tied to each other since they exchanged some words at a press conference back in September of 2015, but have yet to cross paths inside the Octagon.
Cerrone has won his last three fights, the two most recent coming at lightweight, with wins over Al Iaquinta and Alex Hernandez at 155 pounds. Meanwhile, Conor McGregor has won two of his last three UFC fights, with one coming at welterweight and the other happening when he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to become the lightweight champion back in 2016.
Does a fight between “Cowboy” and “The Notorious” make sense to you?
