Daniel Cormier believes Islam Makhachev has done enough to overthrow Jon Jones in pound for pound rankings
UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has explained why he believes Islam Makhachev should be the new pound-for-pound #1 ahead of Jon Jones.
Last weekend, Islam Makhachev knocked out Alexander Volkanovski in the main event of UFC 294. In doing so, he successfully retained his UFC lightweight championship and firmly cemented himself as the best 155-pounder on the planet.
In the eyes of many, the win should’ve been enough to make him the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world in the UFC’s official rankings. Alas, while he did move above Alexander Volkanovski, he was still left at #2 behind Jon Jones.
In the eyes of Daniel Cormier, however, Makhachev should be the one who claims the top spot.
Cormier backs Makhachev for P4P #1
“The way he was able to separate himself from Alex over the course of eight months — special,” Cormier said. “It was awesome to watch. He’s the best. Now people will start to wonder if he will be a better world champion that Khabib, if he’s going to be the greatest lightweight of all time.
“I don’t know (if) that’s going to happen… There’s work to be done for Makhachev to be considered the greatest of all time,” Cormier continued. “But what can’t be denied is that he is now the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and why? because of the person that he just beat and the fashion that he just beat (him).”

Jon Jones will get a chance to cement his #1 spot next month when he defends his UFC heavyweight championship against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295.
