Randy Couture outlines Daniel Cormier’s path to victory against Stipe Miocic
On July 7, in the main event of the UFC 226, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will return to his former haunts in the heavyweight division, where he’ll battle reigning champion Stipe Miocic.
Ahead of this fight, many of the game’s top fighters and analysts have weighed in, making their predictions one way or the other. One of the latest to do so is former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture. In his opinion, this a winnable fight for Cormier, particularly if he’s able to lean on his Olympic-level wrestling.
“Obviously, I think Daniel started in the heavyweight division, he’s a big guy, he’s got a great wrestling pedigree and he’s facing arguably the best heavyweight out there right now in Stipe Miocic,” Couture told MMANytt (h/t MMANews.com). “It’s going to be an interesting, technical fight.”
“I think if Daniel can find a way to make Stipe Miocic wrestle him as much as possible during the course of that fight, it’s going to be a good night for him,” Couture continued. “If Stipe uses his range and striking IQ to keep Daniel off of him, it could be a good night for Stipe. It’s one of those fights, toss a coin, who’s going to win.”
“I’m a wrestler, so I tend to feel like that wrestling pedigree is going to work well for Daniel,” Couture concluded. “But Stipe’s one of the toughest guys out there. He’s a great fighter.”
When we last saw Daniel Cormier in action, he thrashed the dangerous Volkan Oezdemir to a TKO win to retain his light heavyweight strap.
Miocic, meanwhile, last fought on the same card, dominating the highly hyped Francis Ngannou for five rounds in the main event.
