Stipe Miocic fires back at Daniel Cormier after champ denies rematch

By Tom Taylor - February 6, 2019

Yesterday afternoon, UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier took to Twitter to close the door on a potential rematch Stipe Miocic, the man he defeated to win the belt back at UFC 226 in July.

“Do you guys wanna know why I’m not fighting [Stipe Miocic] again?,” Cormier began.

“Reason 1: He’s being entitled, why have I fought since and he hasn’t. He lost the fight, is he still the champ,” he continued in a followup Tweet. “Reason 2: I’m hurt. Reason 3: How do I do it better? I beat him in a round last time.”

It did not take long for the former champion Stipe Miocic to respond to these comments from Cormier.

Miocic, who still works full-time as a fire fighter, reminds that he offered to fight Cormier on short notice at UFC 230 in November, but that Cormier opted to fight a fresh opponent in Derrick Lewis instead.

“[Daniel Cormier] my entitled ass offered to fight you at UFC2 30 on Nov 3 at [Madison Square Garden],” Miocic wrote on Twitter. “You fought Lewis, while I was fighting fires.”

Daniel Cormier defeated Stipe Miocic by first-round knockout. Prior to this loss, Miocic had defended the UFC heavyweight title a record-breaking three consecutive times, dashing the title dreams Francis Ngannou, Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. Given his status as the most dominant heavyweight champion in UFC history, many fans and pundits were adamant that he deserved an immediate shot at redemption. Miocic, of course, shared this opinion.
