VIDEO | Ovince Saint Preux Calls out Daniel Cormier

By Justin Golightly - November 22, 2017

With Volkan Oezdemir’s legal situation up in the air, the last possible contenders left at light heavyweight are scrambling to get their shot at Daniel Cormier’s UFC title. The last word was that Oezdemir is staying ready just in case he gets good news, but that Alexander Gustafsson may be a replacement. The only problem is, Gustafsson may not be ready by the UFC 220 card in Boston. Enter Ovince Saint Preux. He just knocked out Corey Anderson at UFC 217 and he dropped a video yesterday calling out the champ.

“I heard Volkan [Oezdemir] is out of a fight due to legal problems. [Daniel Cormier], I heard you’re looking for a fight. You know, I’m quick to take a fight. Definitely been wanting to fight you anyways. There was a particular reason why I jumped on the cage when I knocked out Corey Anderson. Whenever you want to make this happen, let’s make it happen.” — Ovince Saint Preux via a video he released on social media.

Daniel Cormier released a statement about Volkan Oezdemir and what that means for his plans. According to the man himself, Saint Preux’s team has already contacted him about a fight before he dropped the video so it looks like he is definitely in the running. Now on a three-fight win streak, Saint Preux edges out Gustafsson on paper who won back-t0-back against Jab Blachowicz and Glover Teixeira. It may seem far with UFC 218 and UFC 219 ahead of us, but January 20th is just around the corner so expect to hear who will fight Cormier soon if they’re keeping him on that Boston card.

“I’ve been waiting for the final go ahead. Obviously this throws a wrench into those plans, when we see what happens to [Volkan] Oezdemir. It’s kind of all fluid right now because we’ve got to see what happens with this guy. Alexander [Alexander] Gustafsson was never gonna’ be ready right now anyway, I think he may be dealing with some things. […] Of course I’d fight Gustafsson and someone told me yesterday that Team Ovince Saint Preux was like, ‘We want a title fight because we’ve got a good winning streak too.’ Whoever is winning gets the title shot, that’s just the way it is. I don’t care who it is.” — Daniel Cormier speaking on on The Anik & Florian Podcast.
