Ricardo Lamas fought through a serious health issue at UFC Argentina: 'Things could’ve ended badly'

Last weekend, in the co-main event of UFC Argentina, long-time UFC featherweight contender Ricardo Lamas scored a late TKO stoppage of the famously durable Darren Elkins. Apparently, however, he was dealing with a fairly serious health issue in the fight. Ricardo Lamas shared the story on his official Instagram account:

The co-main event of UFC Argentina featured a featherweight battle between perennial division contenders Ricardo Lamas and Darren Elkins. Ricardo Lamas enters tonight’s contest looking to rebound, this after dropping back-to-back fights to Mirsad Bektic and Josh Emmett respectively. Prior to that, “The Bully” had scored stoppage wins over Jason Knight and Charles Oliveira.

A featherweight matchup between Ricardo Lamas (18-7) and Darren Elkins (24-6) has been added as the co-main event of UFC Argentina on November 17. UFC officials confirmed the news on Tuesday. Lamas is coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in his career after having fought Josh Emmett and Mirsad Bektic. “The Bully” will be looking for his first win since July 2017, where he finished Jason Knight first-round TKO at UFC 214.

The latest bout to be tacked onto the bill is a dynamite featherweight matchup between all-heart Team Alpha Male star Darren Elkins and surging Australian prospect Alexander Volkanovski. Originally, featherweights Michael Johnson and Darren Elkins were expected to battle on the UFC St. Louis undercard. When the card’s co-main event was scrapped at the last minute, however, Johnson and Elkins were bumped up to the main card. Round one of this fight was all Michael Johnson’s, who pelted his foe with crackling combinations, wobbling him on more than one occasion. By the time the first frame ended, Elkins seemed to be oozing blood from every orifice north of the neck, and yet he managed to get off his stool for the second all the same.

As this card draws ever closer, it is beginning to come together with several key matchups.The latest matchup that has been pencilled onto the bill is a featherweight scrap between top-15 ranked fighters. In one corner, we’ll have hard nosed Team Alpha Male fighter Darren Elkins. In the other, we’ll have New York’s own Dennis Bermudez. This matchup was first reported by Ariel Helwani on Twitter. At the time of this writing, the UFC has not officially announced the matchup.
