Henry Cejudo takes a shot at "bum fighter of the year" Deiveson Figueiredo

MMA great Henry Cejudo took another shot at UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo, calling him the “bum fighter of the year.” Figueiredo just finished a tremendous campaign in 2020 that saw him win the vacant UFC flyweight champion with a stoppage win over Joseph Benavidez on Fight Island. He also had another win over Benavidez earlier in the year, plus a successful title defense over Alex Perez at UFC 255. Figueiredo then stole the show along with fellow flyweight contender Brandon Moreno when they two put on one of the best fights of the year when they fought to a draw at UFC 256.

Deiveson Figueiredo gets UFC pay-per-view points going forward, says manager

UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo will receive pay-per-view points in his contract going forward, says his manager Wallid Ismail. Figueiredo has been open about his desire for a better contract in the wake of his incredible 2020 that has seen him crowned as “Fighter of the Year” by many MMA analysts. The Brazilian went 3-0-1 last year, with two wins over Joseph Benavidez by stoppage, a quick finish over Alex Perez, and an absolute war with Brandon Moreno that was a “Fight of the Year” candidate in itself. However, Figueiredo wasn’t getting pay-per-view points for those bouts.

UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo wants the UFC to introduce a new BMF title so he can throw down with Henry Cejudo. Figueiredo spoke to MMAFighting.com in a recent interview and said that he believes he deserves a raise from the UFC, including the introduction of pay-per-view bonuses in his contract. After a brilliant 2020 campaign that saw Figueiredo win three fights and draw with Brandon Moreno in a “Fight of the Year” candidate, he’s looking to make a lot more money in 2021 and have bigger fights. One of those bouts could be against the former champ Cejudo.

The medical suspensions for last Saturday’s UFC 256 card have been revealed, and to nobody’s surprise, headliners Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno could be out for awhile. Figueiredo, the UFC flyweight champion, and Moreno, the streaking top contender, collided in the UFC 256 main event, and battled tooth-and-nail for five, hectic rounds. At the end of the razor-close contest, both men were black and blue, and the cage-side judges scored the fight a majority draw. After this flyweight war, both men are facing six-month suspensions.

It was a very competitive fight that turned out to be a draw because of a foul that occurred in the third round of the fight. In that round, Figueiredo landed a brutal low blow on Moreno, and referee Jason Herzog took one point for the foul, which ultimately led to the draw.

The two best flyweights in the world went the full 25 minutes and looked for the finish the whole way through in an absolute war that many are calling the best flyweight fight of all time. At the end of the five rounds, the judges couldn’t declare a winner, scoring the fight a majority draw. A point deduction to Figueiredo for a low blow in the third round proved to cost him the unanimous decision win.

Referee Jason Herzog responded to the backlash from fans after taking a point from Deiveson Figueiredo in the main event of UFC 256. In the third round of the epic title fight between Figueiredo and Moreno, the champ connected on a vicious low blow that caused Moreno a considerable amount of pain. Figueiredo had also committed a lesser foul earlier in the fight with an accidental eye poke, and Herzog decided that it was time to take a point. The referee, wanting to get the fight under control, deducted one point from Figueiredo for the low blow foul.

Figueiredo and Moreno fought 25 minutes tooth-and-nail to a majority draw in the main event of UFC 256. It was an incredible fight between the two best flyweights in the world, but even five rounds couldn’t determine a clear winner. With the end result being so controversial, and with the fight being so good to watch, UFC president Dana White has confirmed that there will be a rematch in 2021 for the UFC flyweight title.

Brandon Moreno issued a statement after his war with Deiveson Figueiredo, saying “Yesterday’s fight is why I dedicate myself to this.” Moreno had the biggest fight of his life on Saturday night at UFC 256, going all-out for 25 minutes in a crazy war with Figueiredo. It was an extremely close fight to call, and the judges ultimately ended up scoring the bout as a draw. Regardless, it was an incredible fight and both men need to be commended for their epic performances. For Moreno, especially, it was a great showing for him considering he was a big underdog heading into the fight. But he showed in this matchup that he’s an elite UFC flyweight.

Following their main event of UFC 256, the official judges’ scorecards were released for the Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Brandon Moreno war. The UFC 256 headliner turned out to be one of the greatest fights of the year, the greatest flyweight fight of all time, and one of the best fights in UFC history, period. Both Figueiredo and Moreno went to the well for the full 25 minutes and the fight went down to the wire as both men had their moments. Figueiredo ended up winning that fight and then took the rematch on Fight Island, this time making weight. He just made weight for his recent title defense against Alex Perez at UFC 255 and he expects to make weight again when he takes on Brandon Moreno at UFC 256 this Saturday night in Las Vegas.
