Anderson Silva releases statement after controversial win, asserts himself as 'the best in the world'

Anderson Silva picked up his first official win in over four years last weekend at UFC 208. However, the fight did not go without some controversy. Silva was awarded a unanimous decision over Derek Brunson in the co-main event of the evening that many people had Brunson winning on their personal scorecards. Brunson also took to social media where he broke down the entire fight and gave his reasoning on why he believes he decisively won the fight.

Last night, the UFC touched down in beautiful Brooklyn, New York with UFC 208, an admittedly slow, but undeniably historical night of mixed martial arts. In the main event of the evening, we saw Dutch kickboxing specialist Germaine De Randamie become the UFC’s first ever women’s featherweight champion with a controversial decision defeat of former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm. The co-main event, meanwhile, produced an equally controversial result.

A key middleweight bout between former division title holder Anderson Silva and Derek Brunson served as the co-main event of tonight’s UFC 208 pay-per-view card in Brooklyn, New York. Round one begins and Silva takes the center of the octagon. Brunson comes forward and lands a leg kick. He circles out and then lands another leg kick. Silva comes forward and lands a left hand. Brunson leaps in with a right but Silva counters with a left. Derek with an inside leg kick. Anderson charges forward and throws a combination. Brunson ducks under and shoots in for a takedown. He presses Silva against the fence. Anderson breaks free and circles out. The fighters trade punches in the center of the cage. Brunson shoots in for a takedown but it is not there. Derek lands a left and then a right in the clinch. The fighters break and Brunson misses with a front kick. Derek circles and lands a leg kick. He lands another hard kick to the outside of Anderson’s leg. Silva pressing forward now. He lands a kick to the body and then throws a wheel kick. Brunson lands an uppercut and then another. Silva attempts a flying knee that misses. He falls down and Brunson drops in to his guard as round one comes to an end.

The fight is one that has drawn the attention of MMA fans, who are eager to see Brunson and Silva step into the Octagon for a fight that has the stylistic makings of a thrilling scrap. Since signing with the promotion in 2012, Brunson has been on a tear, going 7-2 over the course of the past five years. In 2014, Brunson suffered the first defeat of his UFC career at the hands of Yoel Romero in a fight he was arguably winning. After out-striking Romero, and taking the Olympic wrestler down three times throughout the first two rounds, Brunson was TKOd in the third round. Fortunately for the All-American Wrestler, he bounced back in dominant fashion, going on a 5-fight win streak that saw him finish four of the wins in the very first round. On the cusp of a title shot in 2016, Brunson stepped into the Octagon with streaking middleweight Robbie Whittaker in a scrap that was promoted to the main event just weeks before the fight. For Anderson Silva, he will be looking to return to the win column and secure his first win since his 2012 win over Stephan Bonnar. While Silva defeated Nick Diaz in early 2015, he failed a drug test for PEDs, and the win was overturned to a no contest. As a result, Anderson Silva is currently on a 4-fight skid that is broken into a 2-fight skid by the no contest with Diaz. Following his no contest fight with Diaz, Silva dropped a controversial unanimous decision to Michael Bisping in London, before then stepping in on just 48 hours notice to fight Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 in July, where he dropped a unanimous decision.

Earlier this week, the UFC’s November 26 trip to Melbourne, Australia took a significant blow, as former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold was forced out of his planned bout with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza with an injury. When this unfortunate news broke, there was speculation that the UFC might scramble to find a replacement opponent for Jacare. While that is still not out of the question, we can now confirm that Jacare will no longer participate in the main event. That honor will instead go to middleweights Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson, who were originally expected to fill the co-main event spot.
