Report: Donald Cerrone to return in UFC Gdansk main event

Tom Taylor - September 7, 2017

The UFC has been looking for a main event for its October 21 return to Poland for some time. For a moment, it looked as though that main event would pit Brazilian middleweight knockout artist Thiago Santos against debuting Polish star. Unfortunately, that proposed main event fell through. Now, it seems, the promotion is close to locking down a replacement main event, and it involves all-action welterweight star Donald Cerrone. According to reports from MMAUno.com and @TalkMMA on Twitter, a bout between Cerrone and rising British striker Darren Till is being discussed as the card’s main event. When we last saw Cerrone in action, he lost a controversial decision to former welterweight champion and fellow action fighter Robbie Lawler. This loss was preceded by an upset knockout loss to the surging Jorge Masvidal. Prior to these back to back losses, Cerrone went 4-0 at welterweight, trashing Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, Rick Story and Matt Brown to establish himself as a legitimate contender in the division.

Donald Cerrone eyes quick turnaround after initial medical suspension is shortened

Tom Taylor - August 3, 2017

After two previously scheduled bouts fell through, Donald Cerrone and Robbie Lawler finally went to war last weekend. Just like we all hoped, the fight was a very fun one, with both men enjoying moments of success. In the end, however, Lawler walked away the winner, picking up a somewhat controversial decision win. Unfortunately, it came to light after this action-packed fight that “Cowboy” Cerrone had sustained an eye-injury during the contest, and that he could be sidelined for something north of 180 days.

Dana White gives unfortunate update on Donald Cerrone vs. Robbie Lawler rebooking

bjpenndotcom - June 29, 2017

This week, unfortunate news surfaced that UFC veteran Donald Cerrone had been forced out of his scheduled UFC 213 scrap against former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. The news was a big blow to the MMA community, who had been anxiously awaiting the fight since UFC 205, where the fight was initially scheduled to take place. Unfortunately, when the fight was booked for UFC 205 at the end of 2016, it was Lawler who backed out of the fight, revealing that he would like to take more time off after being knocked out by Tyron Woodley at UFC 201, where Lawler lost the welterweight title.

bjpenndotcom - June 28, 2017

UFC veteran Donald Cerrone was gearing up for his highly anticipated showdown with Robbie Lawler at UFC 213, however news surfaced this week revealing that Cerrone had been forced out of the fight due to a minor injury. The UFC revealed their plan to keep the fight intact, and postpone it until Cerrone is healthy, however while details on the injury were initially scarce, Cerrone has since taken to social media to clarify the situation. Let everyone know this is not an injury. But a super bad infection in my blood. 7 days of IV and I'll be back at it. Working on getting the fight rescheduled

Donald Cerrone injured, fight with Lawler likely to be rescheduled

Tom Taylor - June 28, 2017

The injury bug has taken a big bite out of UFC 213, which goes down on July 8 in Las Vegas. According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Donald Cerrone has sustained an injury in training that is likely to force him out of his anticipated UFC 213 bloodletting with former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. Apparently, however, the injury is not too severe, and the fight could be rescheduled for UFC 214, which goes down on July 29 in Anaheim. This marks the second time this all-violence Cerrone vs. Lawler bout has been nixed. The bout was originally scheduled for the blockbuster UFC 205 back in November, but was unfortunately scrapped just days after it was announced when Lawler withdrew.

Dana White forced Donald Cerrone to sit out after Jorge Masvidal KO

bjpenndotcom - May 6, 2017

In 2016, UFC lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone made the move to welterweight. ‘Cowboy’ then proceeded to put together arguably the most impressive run of 2016 as he finished 4 straight opponents to land himself at #5 on the UFC’s official welterweight rankings. Unfortunately for Cerrone, in his first fight of 2017, he was viciously TKOd by Jorge Masvidal at ‘UFC Fight Night: Denver’ in January. Following the vicious KO loss, Cerrone’s name was surprisingly absent from MMA headlines despite the fact that ‘Cowboy’ is one of the most active fighters in the UFC. Now, with Cerrone set to face Robbie Lawler in July at UFC 213, he revealed that the reason he has been absent from the Octagon is actually due to UFC President Dana White sidelining him.

Donald Cerrone declares UFC 'timeout' was forced upon him

Russell Ess - May 5, 2017

It’s typical to see Donald Cerrone fight about four times a year, being one of the more active fighters in the UFC. We’ve seen Cerrone turn around and fight twice in the Octagon is a span of 15 days back when he fought Myles Jury and former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson back in January 2015. “Cowboy” last fought on January 28, where he lost for the fist time at welterweight in the UFC as Jorge Masvidal ended his four-fight winning streak at 170. With the recent announcement of Cerrone meeting former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in the middle of the Octagon at UFC 213 on July 8, Cerrone says he was forced to take some time off after his TKO loss to Masvidal.

If it weren't for "Cowboy", Michelle Waterson never would have transitioned from ring girl to fighter

Tom Taylor - April 12, 2017

This Saturday night, in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 24, “The Karate Hottie” Michelle Waterson will take on long-time contender Rose Namajunas in a key strawweight bout. If she wins, she will emerge as one of the division’s top contenders, and could well earn herself a shot at Joanna Jedrzejczyk‘s ferociously guarded strawweight title. Needless to say, Waterson is one of the best strawweight fighters on earth. If it weren’t for the encouragement of a fellow UFC star, however, she never would have stopped being a ring card girl and started a career as a fighter . That UFC star is fan favorite lightweight turned welterweight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Waterson explains Cowboy’s involvement in her early career in an Interview with The Buzzer on Fox Sports. See it below, followed by a transcription.

Coach Brandon Gibson reflects on Donald Cerrone's loss to Jorge Masvidal

bjpenndotcom - April 5, 2017

Recently, former lightweight #1 contender Donald Cerrone looked to continue his impressive 4-fight welterweight win streak at ‘UFC Fight Night: Denver’ where he fought Jorge Masvidal in a pivotal showdown. Masvidal put on a stellar performance as he rocked Cerrone in the first round, before then ultimately finishing ‘Cowboy’ in the second round with strikes. The loss snapped Cerrone’s 4-fight win streak that saw him finish 4 straight opponents at welterweight throughout the course of 2016 following a 1st round TKO loss to Rafael dos Anjos in 2015 in a failed bid for the lightweight title.
