Exclusive | Benson Henderson’s plan going forward: “Finishes, finishes, finishes!”
Former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson (24-8 MMA) has had a rough start to his Bellator MMA carrer.
“Smooth” has gone just 1-3 since joining the Bellator ranks in April of 2016.
All three of Henderson’s most recent setbacks have come by way of judges decision. In fact, his two most recent losses to Michael Chandler and Patricky Freire came via split-decision.
With that said, “Bendo” realizes that he needs to take the judges out of the equation, so he plans on scoring nothing but finishes going forward.
Here is what “Smooth” had to say in the most recent episode of BJ PENN Radio:
“All I know is that I just need to win my next fight, and I need to get finishes! Finishes, finishes, finishes!” said Henderson. “I’ve been leaving too many fights to the judges. Early in my career I did, you know, put up a streak of a winning cold decisions, close decisions too. I’m man enough to admit when a decisions pretty close. Frankie (Edgar) number two, that was a pretty close one, you know? That was a close fight. I was glad I got my hand raised, but I know, I’m aware, I’m man enough to admit that it was a close fight.”
Henderson continued:
“Then we have those fights where you think you will get your hand raised, think you did enough to get the decision. But I have come to realize that it is just not your opponent in there with you, it is also the judges. Those three judges are in there and against you too. Which is fine, which is just dandy as long as you know that ahead of time. With Bellator, I don’t think I’m going to be winning any decisions. Now that I know that, cool. No problem. Done. I’m coming for the finishes!”
Benson Henderson will square off with fellow UFC veteran Roger Huerta in the main event of Bellator 196 next weekend. Do you think “Smooth” will be able to score a finish over Huerta? Sound off PENN Nation!
