EXCLUSIVE | BJ Penn applauds Georges St-Pierre’s comeback win, speculates what’s next for him
Earlier this month, in the main event of the ridiculously stacked UFC 217, former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre made his long-awaited return to the Octagon. While St-Pierre’s heyday occured at welterweight, however, his comeback fight occurred at middleweight, where he took on reigning champ Michael Bisping for the title.
Despite the length of his layoff and his apparent size disadvantage, St-Pierre dazzled in this fight, battering his foe en route to a third-round submission win – his first stoppage win since 2009.
Pretty much everybody was impressed by St-Pierre’s dominant return to the cage. That includes one of the Canadian’s oldest rivals in our own BJ Penn.
“You know what? That was a huge win for GSP, he looked good, he looked great in his comeback,” Penn said on this week’s special Tuesday edition of BJ Penn Radio. “It looked awesome, he’s good a that weight.”
With his win over Bisping in the books, St-Pierre is now expected to defend his title against interim middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. That being said, there are also several other compelling options on the Canadian’s menu, including a return to welterweight where he could battle divisional champ Tyron Woodley or even MMA superstar Conor McGregor.
According to BJ Penn, however, the most likely option for the resurgent St-Pierre is probably a title-unifying showdown with Robert Whittaker.
“Yeah I think knowing him, he’ll defend his new weight belt,” Penn said. “He likes to do stuff [like that]. He likes to defend the championship and he’s got a great opponent in front of him. Robert Whitaker, [they are] two great fighters.”
While the UFC has openly admitted it hopes to book this fight for its upcoming pay-per-view in Perth, this plan is decidedly not set in stone. Who do you want to see Georges St-Pierre fight next?
