EXCLUSIVE | Colby Covington explains why Kamaru Usman is an easier matchup than Tyron Woodley
At UFC 235, Tyron Woodley was put his title on the line when he took on Kamaru Usman, not Colby Covington like many expected. Ultimately, Usman dominated Woodley from bell to bell to become the new welterweight champion.
Now, Colby Covington will apparently be getting the first crack at Usman. The two have had a feud going on for a while now and ‘Chaos’ believes Usman is actually an easier matchup than Woodley is.
“You know it’s an easier matchup,” Covington recently said on BJPENN.com Radio. “Woodley is an easy matchup. He doesn’t have cardio, but Usman he doesn’t know how to strike. He doesn’t know how to punch. You know I’d went and re-watched some of his fights and I see a lot of weaknesses, a lot of holes in his game. As you can see he’s already emotional, so you know, we’re gonna get an emotional fighter whenever I fight him.
“I’m better than him everywhere,” he added. “He’s a D2 level wrestler. His striking sucks, he’s over there with whatever that guys name is that was some wash up out of Holland or whatever. I have a legit Muay Thai world champion striking coach, Gregory Choplin from France, who’s taking me to new levels and of course I’m at the world’s greatest gym American Top Team where I’m improving every day. He doesn’t stand a chance honestly. It’s not going five rounds. He’s getting finished.”
For now, nothing has been signed but all signs point to Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman fighting next. When that will be is unknown but ‘Chaos’ hinted towards sometime in the summer in June or July.
Do you agree with Colby Covington that Kamaru Usman is an easier match up than Woodley?
