EXCLUSIVE | Stephen Thompson discusses potential fight with “brutal” Robbie Lawler
Former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger Stephen Thompson has been eyeing a fight with former division champion Robbie Lawler for quite some time.
Unfortunately for “Wonderboy” and fight fans alike, the promotion has yet to book a scrap between himself and the “Ruthless One”.
Most recently reports surfaced that Thompson and Lawler were finally slated to square off at the UFC’s first event on ESPN which is slated for January 18, 2019.
During a recent interview with BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor, Stephen Thompson once again acknowledged his desire to fight Robbie Lawler, but added that talks of a booked fight are very premature.
“I mean it is no secret, I have wanted to fight Robbie Lawler for the longest time. I am a big fan of his and have been since the Strikeforce days. He is such a brutal guy in terms of his fighting style. He loves to stand and trade so I think it would make for a great fight.”
Thompson acknowledged that fans have been asking him about a potential fight with Lawler for ages.
“Fans always come up and ask me ‘Hey when are you fighting Robbie?’ and tell me how awesome they think that fight would be. So yeah I’m definitely up for it. Unfortunately at this time there is just nothing set in stone when it comes to me fighting Robbie. It has been mentioned by the UFC but that is about it. I don’t even know if Robbie would be ready by January. So at this time I really don’t know who I’ll be facing next. It could really be anybody at this point.”
Stephen Thompson is still recovering from knee surgery and is hopeful that he can return to full time training in the coming weeks.
