‘Platinum’ Mike Perry: Ellenberger showed he’s a punk, a quitter in Masvidal fight
On April 22, fan favorite slugger “Platinum” Mike Perry will attempt to rebound from his first professional loss. His opponent in this effort will be brick-fisted welterweight veteran Jake Ellenberger.
In advance of this fight, Perry joined host Kinch on BJ Penn Radio to give his take on Ellenberger as an opponent. Apparently, Perry had nothing against his upcoming foe until they appeared together on Chael Sonnen’s You’re Welcome Podcast, where Ellenberger let some trash talk fly.
“I never had an issue with the guy, but he said some really stupid things on that Chael Sonnen show, so now I’m kind of like, ‘well now I don’t like him.’ He’s an idiot.”
While Perry claims he didn’t initially have anything against Ellenberger, however, he did admit he’s considered his upcoming foe “a punk” ever since his strange loss to Jorge Masvidal, which saw him get TKO’d after getting his toe stuck in the edge of the cage.
“To be honest, I never liked his fighting style,” Perry said. “I think he’s a punk, and I think he quits. His toe got stuck in the cage and he lost his fight against [Jorge] Masvidal because of that? That’s how you gave up? Cause your toe got stuck? I would have ripped my toe off and kicked Masvidal in the face with it.”
Prior to his recent loss, which saw him give up a decision to Alan Jouban, Perry went 9-0 as a pro. Two of these wins occurred in the UFC’s Octagon, where he knocked out strong opposition in Hyun Gyu Lim and Danny Roberts.
Ellenberger, meanwhile, preceded his bizarre loss to Masvidal with a career-saving knockout win over Matt Brown. The veteran is 31-12 in sum.
