Frankie Edgar wants new UFC contract, fights with Lamas, Holloway

Tom Taylor - February 7, 2017

In November of 2016, on the main card of UFC 205, Frankie Edgar defeated Jeremy Stephens by unanimous decision. This victory marked the second last obligation on Edgar’s current UFC contract. With one fight now remaining on his current UFC deal, the former lightweight champ and two-time featherweight title challenger is now looking to the future. While many other top fighters – such as Lorenz Larkin and Ryan Bader – have been keen to fight out their contracts and explore the free agent market, Edgar is hoping to sign a new deal with the UFC before his current contract ends.

Frankie Edgar weighs-in on potential BJ Penn return

bjpenndotcom - January 20, 2017

Earlier this month, at ‘UFC Fight Night: Phoenix’, UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn stepped into the Octagon for a highly anticipated showdown with streaking featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez. For Penn, he was seeking his first win in over 5 years as he planned to make a run at the featherweight strap. Unfortunately for the UFC Hall of Famer, Yair Rodriguez’ dynamic and unorthodox striking proved to be too much as he continued to land numerous kicks on the former two-division champ, who showed tremendous heart as he continued to pursue the finish despite continuing to be tagged.

Max Holloway: I'll 'defend the interim title 10 times' if Aldo fight doesn't materialize

Tom Taylor - January 3, 2017

With Conor McGregor now soundly out of the picture, the featherweight spotlight is fixed firmly on two men. The first is Jose Aldo, who surrendered the belt to McGregor in 2015, but was promoted back to undisputed champion when McGregor was stripped of the featherweight title in late 2016. The other is Max Holloway, who won the interim featherweight title with a defeat of former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis at December’s UFC 206. As the champion and interim champion of the division, Aldo and Holloway have been rumored for a title unification bout for several weeks. Apparently, however, the UFC is having a difficult time putting this fight together, as the bout has yet to be made official.

Frankie Edgar Discusses his Fighting Future: I'm Still Getting Better

Tom Taylor - November 15, 2016

Long before Conor McGregor’s history-making defeat of Eddie Alvarez, Tyron Woodley’s memorable draw with Stephen Thompson, and Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s domination of Karolina Kowalkiewicz occured on UFC 205’s main card, Frankie Edgar scored a much needed win over Jeremy Stephens on the undercard. Though Edgar was rattled by a second-round Stephens head kick, he was the better man throughout the rest of the fight, which ultimately earned him the judges’ favor. With this win, Edgar bounced back from a July loss to Jose Aldo, and reasserted himself as one of the featherweight division’s top contenders. While his status as one of the best featherweight fighters on earth is irrefutable, however, it’s hard to say what the future holds for him.

Frankie Edgar reflects on win over Jeremy Stephens in New York

bjpenndotcom - November 15, 2016

This past weekend on the preliminary card of UFC 205, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar stepped into the Octagon to fight top ranked featherweight Jeremy Stephens. Edgar, a New Jersey native, received a warm welcome to the Octagon by the New York crowd. Edgar put on an impressive performance as he ultimately picked up a unanimous decision win over Jeremy Stephens, slamming ‘Lil Heathen’ on several occasions while going for the takedown despite being the smaller fighter. The win also returned Edgar to the win column after dropping a unanimous decision to Jose Aldo on the main card of UFC 200 back in July for the interim featherweight championship. The loss to Aldo, which snapped Edgar’s 5-fight win streak, was his first in three years, with his most recent loss before that coming to Aldo at UFC 156.

Frankie Edgar breaks down loss to Jose Aldo

bjpenndotcom - November 8, 2016

Back in July, at UFC 200, Frankie Edgar & Jose Aldo stepped into the Octagon to square off for the interim featherweight championship. In addition to the pair fighting for the interim featherweight strap, they were also fighting for a chance to step into the Octagon with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who knocked out Aldo in just 13 seconds to claim the featherweight championship back in December at UFC 194. As if the stakes weren’t high enough, the fight was also a rematch between the pair, who first met at UFC 156 in 2013, where Aldo secured a unanimous decision win to retain the featherweight title.

Frankie Edgar Talks Possible Bantamweight Drop: I’ll Cut to ’35 For the Title and Take it From There

Tom Taylor - September 2, 2016

Though he remains one of the very best fighters on earth, Frankie Edgar is currently in a bit of a tough spot. After losing his lightweight title to Benson Henderson, and failing to reclaim it in a rematch with the same man, he dropped down to featherweight in search of greener pastures. Unfortunately, he would lose his first featherweight title fight against Jose Aldo, and three years later, lose a second title fight with Aldo on the main card of UFC 200. So, while no sane person would refute his status as one of the game’s best fighters, he’s suddenly a bit of a tough-sell as a title challenger at both lightweight and featherweight.

Frankie Edgar's coach: He was stiff arming kids during flag football

bjpenndotcom - July 6, 2016

Frankie Edgar is undoubtably a fighter at heart. Throughout the course of his 11 year professional career, the former UFC lightweight champion has defeated some of the biggest names in the sport, including BJ Penn, Gray Maynard, Urijah Faber, and Chad Mendes. At UFC 200, Edgar will look to add former featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo’s name to that list. The fight will be a rematch for Edgar, who lost to Aldo in 2013 at UFC 156. Since then Edgar has gone on a tear, winning 5 fights in a row. Prior to the fight, Edgar’s coach, Mark Henry, recalled a time when Edgar partook in a flag football game with kids and adults at his house. The former lightweight champion didn’t take it easy.
