ONE 165 Results: Garry Tonon submits Martin Nguyen in Round 1 (Video)
A highly anticipated featherweight MMA fight between Martin Nguyen and Garry Tonon took place at tonight’s ONE 165 event at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.
The animosity between Nguyen and Tonon has been simmering for years, playing out vividly on social media platforms. However, tonight the time had come for the verbal jabs to transform into physical combat.
Nguyen (15-7 MMA), currently ranked as the #3 contender, entered the bout coming off a unanimous decision victory over Leonardo Casotti last February. That win was preceded by a TKO loss to Ilya Freymanov in October of 2022.
Meanwhile, Garry Tonon (9-1 MMA) entered tonight’s contest sporting a two-fight winning streak, his most recent being a submission victory over Shamil Gasanov this past July. ‘The Lion Killer‘ had only gone to decision once in his previous nine professional fights.
Tonight’s ‘Tonon vs. Nguyen’ bout resulted in yet another first-round stoppage victory for the former World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu gold medalist. Gary Tonon was able to get the fight to canvas and promptly locked up a rear-naked choke submission to secure the finish.
