If Anthony “Rumble” Johnson had his way, he’d be fighting Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight title in the main event of UFC 206 on December 10. Unfortunately for him, Cormier was forced to withdraw from this bout with a groin injury. In the wake of Cormier’s withdrawal from the card, the UFC tried valiantly to find a replacement opponent for Rumble. The most suitable option they could fish out of the small pool of fighters who were willing to fight a monster like Rumble on just a few weeks notice, was the UFC’s fifth ranked middleweight, Gegard Mousasi.

After news surfaced earlier this week that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had been forced out of his UFC 206 scrap with Anthony Johnson just two weeks before the fight due to torn adductor in his groin, the UFC began to search for a replacement opponent for ‘Rumble’. The process was guaranteed to be a difficult one, given that Johnson had not only defeated, but knocked out everyone in the top 5 of the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

Gegard Mousasi was able to exact revenge on Uriah Hall at yesterday’s UFC Fight Night 99 event in Belfast, Northern Ireland, scoring a first-round TKO victory over “Primetime” in the fight card’s main event. Former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi was able to score revenge on Uriah Hall earlier today at the UFC Fight Night 99 event in Belfast, Northern Ireland, earning a first-round TKO victory over “Primetime”. Mousasi and Hall exchanged shots on their feet for the opening couple of minutes of the main event contest, but Gegard eventually opted to take the scrap to the floor late in the round where he quickly earned a TKO finish with some nasty ground and pound.

Saturday afternoon in Belfast, Ireland, #5 ranked UFC middleweight Gegard Mousasi will step into the Octagon against #10 ranked Uriah Hall in a highly anticipated rematch that will see Mousasi given the chance to avenge his highlight reel KO loss to Hall which took place last year. Ahead of the fight, Mousasi has admitted that he knows he is taking a risk by accepting the fight given that he is not only ranked higher than Hall, but is also on a 3-fight winning streak, whereas Hall is on a 2-fight losing streak:

Top ranked UFC middleweight Gegard Mousasi has been on a tear of the UFC middleweight division over the course of 2016. Mousasi kicked off the year by defeating Thales Leites at ‘UFC Fight Night: London’ in February, before making it 2-straight wins as he KO’d Thiago Santos on the UFC Fight Pass prelims of UFC 200 in July. In his most recent Octagon outing, Mousasi TKOd former UFC champion Vitor Belfort in the co-main event of UFC 204 in Manchester, England, back in October, cementing his place near the top of a stacked UFC middleweight division.

This unfortunately left the UFC scrambling for a viable main event on just a few weeks’ notice. Though it can’t have been easy, the organization was able to produce a compelling replacement main event. This new headliner will see top-5 middleweight Gegard Mousasi attempt to avenge arguably the toughest loss of his career against the hot-and-cold Uriah Hall.

Earlier this month, in the co-main event of UFC 204, Gegard Mousasi got a fight with an opponent he’d been calling out for years: Vitor Belfort. He did not let this long-awaited opportunity to fight Belfort go to waste. After a strong first round, the Dutchman finished things off in the second, grounding the fight, climbing into full mount, and raining down the punches for a nice TKO win. With this win in the books, Mousasi now sets his sights on his next step up the light heavyweight ladder. Because the division’s top four contenders are currently scheduled opposite one another, however, Mousasi was forced to get creative in the hunt for his next opponent. This led him to call out aging middleweight GOAT Anderson Silva.

UFC middleweight Gegard Mousasi has been campaigning for a fight with Vitor Belfort for years. At UFC 204, which will emanate from Manchester, England on October 8, the Dutchman will finally get the fight he’s been asking for. A few years ago, Belfort was one of the most ferocious fighters on the UFC roster–though he was helped by his use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) at the time. Now that TRT has been banned by the UFC, however, Belfort has diminished quite significantly. This has Mousasi feeling very confident ahead of their anticipated UFC 204 showdown.
