Georges St-Pierre explains why Alexander Volkanovski could still be “the best fighter” despite back-to-back losses to Islam Makhachev
Georges St-Pierre has given his thoughts on Alexander Volkanovski’s two defeats to Islam Makhachev.
At UFC 298 later this month, Alexander Volkanovski will defend his UFC featherweight championship against Ilia Topuria. It will serve as a move back to 145 pounds after his second attempt at capturing the lightweight gold.
Unfortunately, in both of his bouts at 155 last year, he fell short against Islam Makhachev. The first was a tight decision defeat, but the second was a violent head kick knockout on short notice.
In the eyes of many, that established Makhachev as the better fighter of the two. However, in a recent Q&A, MMA legend Georges St-Pierre was asked about Volkanovski’s two performances against the champ.
GSP’s Volkanovski view
“If you watch any sport, the team that wins is not always the best team. The best team don’t always win because otherwise it would be boring. You’ll watch it on paper and you’ll make an analysis and you’ll be ‘oh this team will win’, but that’s not what happens all the time. The odds will favour a certain team but the team that wins is the team that plays the best on the night of the game. Same thing in fighting. The fighter that will win the fight that night is not always the best fighter. Its the fighter that will fight the best on the night of the fight. I’m not making any excuses or anything, this is just how things happen sometimes.”

While he didn’t outright say he thinks Volkanovski is better, he did start his answer by saying he’s a big fan of ‘The Great’.
