Throughout the course of the past year, reports and rumors have continued to surface in regards to a potential return of Georges St-Pierre. In 2016, reports surfaced that Georges St-Pierre and the UFC were currently in the process of negotiating a contract that would see the former welterweight kingpin return from his lengthy hiatus. Reports surfaced that St-Pierre would be returning for a middleweight title fight with Michael Bisping in Canada, however after negotiations with the UFC failed due to a conflicting deal St-Pierre personally had with Under Armour, the former champ released a statement via Twitter saying:

The former kingpin of the UFC welterweight division who hails from Canada was in talks with the UFC to fight at UFC 206, which was in Toronto but both sides failed to come to an agreement. St-Pierre and his lawyer have stated since the failed negotiations, the former UFC champion was a free agent but nothing has resulted in the claimed free agency as of yet.

While the fight appeared to be all but official, St-Pierre released a message to Bisping via social media in which he informed ‘The Count’ that while he hoped to return to the Octagon at the event, negotiations with the UFC didn’t go well, and he won’t be able to fight at the highly anticipated Toronto event. Bisping, understandably bummed out over the news, released a statement in which he informed fans that he has his heart set on fighting at UFC 206, and would be willing to fight anyone, preferably Nick Diaz.
